Real Madrid v Inter: Midfield Crisis Looms Before Champions League Opener
Real Madrid wanted a smooth launch to their Champions League league phase. Instead, they arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu bruised by a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis and staring at a selection headache that cuts straight through the heart of their team.
Inter Milan come to Madrid on Tuesday at 9 p.m. CEST with momentum and, crucially, with far fewer problems. On paper, the Italians look fresher. On the pitch, Real will have to hide their scars.
Midfield ripped apart
The numbers are stark. Eight Real Madrid players are listed as unavailable for the opener, and the damage is heaviest in midfield.
Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are all suspended for the Champions League start. Camavinga and Güler are carrying bans over from last season, while Silva’s absence stems from his red card in a previous clash with Real Madrid.
Those three names alone would hurt any side. For José Mourinho, they represent the core of his selection problem. He admitted Real have “known issues” going into the game but insisted his team will still compete and play to win. He also spoke of having “3, 4, or 5 options” to plug the gaps in midfield, then shut the door on any hint of who gets the nod.
Behind that poker face lies a very real concern: Aurélien Tchouaméni.
The Frenchman has been nursing a muscular problem and is the key doubt in the middle of the pitch. He could return, but Mourinho has not guaranteed he will start. Without him, Real’s structure changes. With him, even at less than 100%, they at least regain a natural anchor.
Endrick is another question mark. The young forward missed the opening matches with a muscular issue and remains doubtful, adding to a long list that already includes Raúl Asencio, Éder Militão, Thiago Pitarch and Rodrygo, all sidelined through injury.
This is not just a trimmed squad. It is a reshaped one.
Inter travel light on problems
On the other side, Inter’s medical bulletin looks almost relaxed by comparison.
UEFA list no confirmed absentees for Cristian Chivu’s side ahead of the trip to Madrid. The only significant concern is Federico Dimarco, who picked up a knee problem during the Serie A meeting with Napoli and is still a doubt.
His situation matters. Dimarco’s left-sided energy and delivery are central to how Inter build attacks and pin opponents back. If he fails his late fitness check, Chivu will need to rework the balance on that flank, adjusting not just personnel but patterns of play.
Apart from that, Inter arrive with a strong core intact. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolò Barella, Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martínez are all expected to feature, giving Chivu a powerful spine and a clear selection advantage over a Real side juggling injuries and suspensions.
On the eve of a Champions League opener at the Bernabéu, that contrast in stability is impossible to ignore.
Predicted lineups: two back threes, one big question
UEFA’s latest predicted lineups suggest both coaches will mirror each other with three-man defences.
For Real Madrid, Mourinho is tipped to go 3-5-2. Thibaut Courtois is expected in goal, protected by a back three of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen.
Across midfield, Denzel Dumfries, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Brahim Díaz and Marc Cucurella are the likely starters, with Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé leading the attack.
It is an aggressive shape, heavy on running and responsibility from the wing-backs and central midfielders. With so many absences, the system may be as much about hiding weaknesses as showcasing strengths.
Inter’s projected XI also leans on a back three. Josep Martínez is expected to start in goal, behind Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni.
Dumfries again appears on the right, with Çalhanoğlu, Barella, Piotr Zieliński and Dimarco across midfield, and Lautaro Martínez paired with Francesco Pio Esposito up front.
All of that, though, comes with an asterisk.
If Tchouaméni is not fit enough to start, Mourinho’s midfield has to be reimagined once more. If Dimarco does not make it, Inter’s left side loses one of its main weapons. Both coaches will wait on final medical updates before locking in their plans, with official lineups due about an hour before kick-off.
One side walks into the Bernabéu patched up and stretched. The other arrives almost at full strength. The question now is whether Real Madrid’s depth and home stage can still bend this tie back in their favour, or if Inter’s cleaner bill of health turns into a statement result in Madrid.
