Premier League Gameweek 5: Injury Updates from Arsenal, Brighton, Fulham
The bulk of the Premier League’s Gameweek 5 managers stepped up to the microphones on Friday, and the early noise is clear: Arsenal look relatively healthy, Brighton are still patched up, and Fulham have a key defender sidelined.
Arsenal: Arteta bullish on defensive options
Mikel Arteta cut a confident figure as he ran through Arsenal’s fitness picture, hinting that the groin issue Ben White appeared to suffer against Sunderland is not expected to keep him out.
“They are all good, we have another training session this afternoon, so we are really positive about everybody,” Arteta said when asked directly about White’s condition.
The same optimism stretched across the rest of his backline options. Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber all missed the midweek Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town, but Arteta suggested their absence was precautionary rather than alarming. Timber, in particular, had already been flagged as a game-time management decision.
“Yeah, we have another session, they are all willing to be part of it, and we have another session to try to make sure that they are fit,” he said when pressed on whether Hincapie, Mosquera and Timber were included in his “all good” assessment.
The one major caveat: William Saliba remains out with a back problem.
Away from the injury list, Arteta lingered on Ezri Konsa’s impact, sounding genuinely taken by the defender’s presence on and off the pitch.
“I heard some great things about Ezri before he joined and when you have him daily you just realise the magnitude of the player that we signed, not only the player but the person, the way he presents himself, the way he’s able to connect with people immediately,” Arteta said.
He highlighted Konsa’s growing bond with “Big Gabi”, describing how the pair already look like a long-standing partnership in the corridors as much as on the pitch.
“That’s a partnership that in my opinion is extremely important on the field and then his attributes, the quality that he delivers to the team is something that really makes us better.”
Arteta also addressed Eberechi Eze’s role off the left, making it clear that it is a zone the playmaker knows inside out.
“He’s always played there in his career, that’s where all his biggest moments in his career and the highlights of his career have come and I think it’s a place that he feels very, very, very comfortable,” Arteta said, noting that Eze can still drift into different pockets.
The selection call between Eze and Christos Tzolis on that flank, he added, comes down to “a lot of factors” – form, the opponent, and the chemistry inside that unit.
Brighton: Azeez waits, Vuskovic ready, Dunk back
At Brighton, Fabian Hurzeler confirmed that new signing Femi Azeez will have to wait for his debut. A hamstring issue keeps him out until after the September international break.
“I think that the best thing for Femi is that he uses this [international break] to get back on his highest physical level and then get used to our style of play,” Hurzeler said. “Then, we will try to work with him individually and hopefully integrate him back into the team, then definitely after the international break, he will be on a top level and we can use him in games.”
The absentee list around him remains lengthy. Mats Wieffer (knee), Jack Hinshelwood, Yankuba Minteh (leg), Evan Ferguson (ankle), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Stefanos Tzimas (knee) and Zadok Yohanna are all still missing.
The mood is lighter with Jaouen Hadjam and Luka Vuskovic. Hadjam is “able to play” after a midweek knock, while Vuskovic has shaken off the cramp that forced him off in the 3-2 win over Manchester United.
“He’s young, he will recover fast. He definitely will be an option for tomorrow,” Hurzeler said of Vuskovic.
Lewis Dunk, rested for the Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford, is also back in contention, restoring some authority to the back line. Georginio Rutter has already made his return with a substitute appearance in the third round, adding another attacking option just as the schedule begins to thicken.
Fulham: Tete out under concussion protocol
At Fulham, the headline is a worrying one for the right flank. Kenny Tete misses out as he follows concussion protocol after a head injury, ruling him out of Gameweek 5.
Tom Cairney remains on the sidelines with a knee issue, removing another experienced voice from Marco Silva’s options.
With defensive reshuffles at Fulham, a near-full complement of defenders at Arsenal, and Brighton still walking the tightrope of a long injury list, Gameweek 5 already feels like it will be shaped as much by who can step onto the pitch as by who can change it.
