Postecoglou Defends Ronaldo After Al-Nassr's Heavy Defeat
Al-Nassr’s 4-0 collapse against Al Ain on Tuesday did more than dent their AFC Champions League Elite campaign. It cut straight to the core of the project built around Cristiano Ronaldo – and lit a fuse under their manager.
This was the Saudi Pro League champions’ heaviest defeat since Ronaldo’s arrival. A humbling night, the kind that invites easy headlines and lazy blame. The kind that usually lands on the biggest name in the dressing room.
Postecoglou bites back
In a tense, spiky press conference, manager Postecoglou refused to let Ronaldo become the scapegoat. The former Tottenham and Nottingham Forest boss bristled when a reporter questioned Al-Nassr’s preparation and claimed Ronaldo had not helped the team.
He snapped back, taking the criticism on himself and pushing it away from his players.
“You say we didn't prepare well, but you were there,” Postecoglou said, as quoted by ESPN. “So you're not saying the truth. Be honest. It's my responsibility. Maybe I haven't done my job well. That's fine. But please don't talk about preparation.”
The defeat had barely settled and already the narrative was circling around Ronaldo’s influence, his age, his role. Postecoglou wasn’t having it.
Ronaldo’s record on the table
What really set him off were suggestions that the Portugal legend had contributed “nothing” in the heavy loss. The manager went straight to the numbers and the context: three goals already this season, despite a limited pre-season.
“Cristiano has scored three goals already,” he said. “He had a limited preparation. This is not about the players. The players are giving everything. They're top players, and they've got great character. The responsibility is mine, okay? But you shouldn't say that about somebody who is still setting an example for everyone.
“And you should be careful when you say things like that about people who have built a career on making all the sacrifices to keep playing. Like I said, you can criticise me, no problem. That's okay. Did he not score in three games? Did he not have chances today?”
The message was clear: question tactics, question selections, question the coach. But don’t casually tear down a player whose career has been defined by relentless standards and sacrifice.
Pressure rising
A 4-0 defeat in continental competition will leave scars, and it will raise doubts about Al-Nassr’s readiness to dominate beyond Saudi Arabia. The scoreboard in Al Ain was brutal, and the questions around this team will only get louder.
Postecoglou has drawn a line in the sand. He has chosen to stand in front of Ronaldo and the squad, to own the failure and shield his stars.
The result is on him, he says. The response will have to be as well.
