Plymouth Achieves First Away Win in League One with 3-2 Victory
Plymouth claimed their first away win of the Sky Bet League One season with a sharp, ruthless 3-2 victory over winless Doncaster – a scoreline that flattered the hosts.
Tom Cleverley’s side controlled long stretches of the contest and, once they accelerated through the gears after the break, Doncaster never truly looked like stopping them.
Evans sets the tone
Plymouth took a while to settle but once they did, they began to pick Doncaster apart. The opener arrived on 28 minutes and summed up the difference in conviction between the two sides.
Oliver Irow drove in a low effort that forced Tommy Simkin into a parry, but the goalkeeper only pushed it into danger. Will Evans reacted first, pouncing on the loose ball and turning it home to give Argyle a deserved lead.
Doncaster’s response was sporadic. Alfie May tried to drag them into life, going closest before the break with an ambitious bicycle kick that took a deflection and looped over the bar. It was eye-catching, but it was also as near as the hosts came in a half where Plymouth looked the more composed and organised outfit.
May strikes back from the spot
The pattern shifted briefly after the interval. Doncaster emerged with more intent, and the pressure told six minutes into the second half.
Owen Bailey surged into the box and went down under a challenge from Matty Sorinola. The referee pointed to the spot, and May stepped up with the kind of certainty Doncaster have been crying out for. His 51st-minute penalty was drilled home, and suddenly the home crowd had something to cling to.
For a moment, it felt like the game might tilt. It didn’t.
Pepple restores control
Conceding jolted Plymouth rather than rattling them. They tightened up, regained their grip in midfield and began to stretch Doncaster again.
On 74 minutes, the visitors sliced through. A clever pass released Bim Pepple into space, and he did the rest with icy calm, striding clear before slotting past Simkin to restore Argyle’s lead.
The goal sucked the air out of Doncaster’s mini-revival. Plymouth sensed it. Cleverley’s side pushed higher, pressed harder, and the third goal arrived as the hosts’ resistance crumbled.
Watts punishes defensive chaos
With seven minutes of normal time left, substitute Caleb Watts settled it. Doncaster’s back line hesitated, a simple ball caused confusion, and Watts pounced on the mix-up. With Simkin stranded, he rolled the ball into an empty net for 3-1.
That should have been the cue for Doncaster to throw everything forward. Instead, Argyle managed the closing stages with minimal fuss, keeping the ball and killing the tempo.
Only deep into stoppage time did Doncaster show any real threat. From a Bayley McCann free-kick, Sean Grehan climbed highest and thumped in a powerful header. It was a fine finish, but it arrived in the final minute of added time, long after the contest had slipped away.
The late goal trimmed the margin, not the gulf. Plymouth left with their first away win of the campaign and the sense of a side starting to find their stride. Doncaster, still without a victory, walked off with a question that grows louder every week: where does their season turn from here?
