Patrick Vieira Addresses Sadio Mané's Absence in Senegal Squad
Patrick Vieira has moved quickly to cool any early storm around his first Senegal squad, shutting down speculation over Sadio Mané’s absence and insisting the Al-Nassr forward is missing only through injury.
The new Senegal head coach raised eyebrows across the country and beyond when his maiden list dropped without the team’s talisman, as he named a group to face Mozambique and Ethiopia in the opening fixtures of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
Questions flew. Was this a statement? A break with the old guard? A hint that Mané’s international chapter was closing?
Vieira says absolutely not.
At his official unveiling on Friday, the former France international explained that he had spoken directly with Mané before going public with the squad, and that the decision was purely medical.
“I spoke with Sadio by phone, and he is suffering from a physical problem, which is why he will not be with us in this camp, but he will probably be present in the next camp,” Vieira said, in comments reported by Senegalese outlet Seneweb.
That line matters. It leaves the door not just ajar, but wide open for the two-time African Footballer of the Year to return for the next international window with the “Lions of Teranga”.

If Mané’s omission sparked intrigue, so did Vieira’s arrival itself. A World Cup winner with France, a Premier League icon with Arsenal, and a coach with experience in England, the United States and France, he is not a man short of options.
He was keen to make one thing crystal clear: he did not come to Dakar chasing a paycheque.
“My choice was a decision that came from the heart, and not for the money,” he said when asked about the financial side of his appointment.
One conversation, he explained, was all it took. The first meeting with the president of the Senegalese Football Federation convinced him the project was worth the leap.
“From the very first meeting that brought me together with the federation president, I immediately agreed to take on this challenge,” Vieira revealed.
No long courtship. No prolonged negotiations. Just a clear vision, and a coach ready to buy in.

Vieira has never hidden his admiration for African football. What pulled him towards Senegal now, he said, was the blend of talent already in place and the wave of players about to break through.
“There was an exceptional generation of players on the verge of emerging, and there was a real opportunity before me to put my top-level experience at their service,” he explained.
This is the crux of his mission. He is not just inheriting a team that has already tasted continental glory; he is stepping into a dressing room where established stars and rising prospects are jostling to define the next era.
His aim, he stressed, is to channel everything he learned at the top of the European game into a new chapter for Senegal, working hand in hand with the federation to build a fresh project around the “Lions of Teranga”.
Mané’s temporary absence, then, is not a rupture but a pause. Vieira’s tenure starts with a clear message: respect for the old leaders, faith in the new generation, and a heart-first commitment to a nation that now expects more than just participation on the African stage.
