Orlando Pirates Face Injury Crisis with Thalente Mbatha Set for Surgery

Orlando Pirates have been dealt a major blow, with influential midfielder Thalente Mbatha set for an extended spell on the sidelines because of a serious knee injury that is likely to require surgery.

The Bafana Bafana international had started both of Pirates’ matches this season, but his knee has deteriorated to the point where medical specialists have advised he “go under the knife”. The exact diagnosis remains under wraps, as does any firm timeline for his return, yet the expectation is clear: the 26-year-old is facing a lengthy absence.

That hits Pirates hard. It also threatens to disrupt South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying plans, where Mbatha had become a reliable piece in the national setup.

Double knee trouble for Bafana

Mbatha’s setback lands just a day after iDiski Times revealed that fellow Bafana Bafana star Evidence Makgopa also needs time out with a knee problem, having played through pain at the World Cup.

Makgopa, also 26, has been told he will not need surgery, but he has been ordered to rest for two months. That rules him out of the opening stretch of the Buccaneers’ 2026/27 campaign and is expected to sideline him for Bafana’s 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.

Two key South Africans. Two knee injuries. Two big holes to fill.

Pressure rises on Pedersen

All of this ramps up the urgency around new signing Sebastian Pedersen. The Norwegian striker only arrived in the country last week, yet the context around him has changed quickly.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou publicly challenged his current forwards after the MTN8 victory over Durban City, saying: “I need my strikers to wake up quickly and help the team.” With Makgopa out and fixtures piling up, that call now carries extra weight.

There was at least a small lift for Pirates supporters on Monday. Club training images showed Pedersen among the group, being put through his paces as he continues his integration into the squad.

Patience vs urgency

The temptation to throw Pedersen straight into the fire is obvious. Goals are needed, the schedule is brutal, and one of the club’s main forwards is out. Yet Ouaddou moved to cool the growing excitement in an interview with SABC Sport over the weekend.

“I think they will have to be a little bit patient because, as I said, we don’t have to rush the process,” he explained.

“Of course, everybody wants to see the new players in the team, but as a coach, together with our performance and medical departments, we have to be cautious and make sure he is fully prepared before bringing him into the game.

“When you start games, you have to be ready psychologically, mentally and physically.

“We don’t want to risk any of those factors.

“When he is on the pitch, it will mean we have received the green light from the performance department.”

With Makgopa now ruled out and Mbatha heading for surgery, that “green light” for Pedersen suddenly feels more urgent than ever.

Midfield depth tested, schedule unforgiving

Mbatha’s absence will sting. He has become a stalwart in Ouaddou’s midfield, a reliable presence in the engine room. The one consolation for Pirates is that central midfield is an area where they are relatively well stocked, with enough depth to at least cover the minutes, if not fully replace his influence.

They will need every bit of that depth.

Before the international break in late September, Pirates are staring at a punishing run: six domestic league fixtures, an MTN8 semi-final, and the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

Key midfielder out long term. Main striker sidelined for two months. A new forward still being eased in.

Pirates’ season is only just starting, but already the margins are tightening.
