Newcastle United's Defensive Challenges Ahead of Liverpool Opener
Newcastle United are counting down the days to Liverpool. The clock is ticking, the squad is thinning, and Matthias Jaissle is trying to knit together a back line that keeps fraying at the edges.
Less than two weeks out from their Premier League opener, the full-back situation looks increasingly tight. Transfers have dragged, injuries have piled up, and what should have been a smooth pre-season has turned into a juggling act.
Hall back in the frame, but questions remain
On the left, there is at least some good news. Lewis Hall’s early August exit from Newcastle’s training camp in Spain raised alarms at the time, but it was ultimately treated as a precaution. That call now looks justified.
Hall has already returned to action, featuring in the midweek friendly against Everton at Murrayfield, and all signs point to him being available for Liverpool – assuming he is still a Newcastle player by then amid ongoing transfer noise around the squad.
Chris Waugh of The Athletic reported before the Everton game that Hall was due back in full training on Tyneside and was pencilled in to feature in one of Newcastle’s final pre-season outings.
“The trio is continuing fitness work at The Knox, Newcastle's training centre, according to the club,” Waugh noted. “Hall is set to train on Tyneside on Sunday and may return for Wednesday's friendly against Everton at Murrayfield, in Edinburgh, or for one of the two practice matches at St James' Park next weekend.”
The plan has largely held. Hall is back on the pitch, but the concern now is volume: can he bank enough minutes and sharpness to handle Liverpool’s intensity from the first whistle?
Miley boost in midfield
There is another ray of light in midfield. Lewis Miley, who suffered a broken leg, is expected to be ready for the opener.
“Newcastle expect midfielder Lewis Miley to be fit for the season opener against Liverpool after recovering from a broken leg,” reported Craig Hope and Simon Jones in the Daily Mail.
It is a significant boost. Miley’s return gives Jaissle more flexibility in the middle of the park and eases some of the pressure created by the defensive issues. But it does not solve the problem on the right.
Livramento ruled out of Liverpool clash
The right-back situation is far more clear-cut – and far less encouraging.
Tino Livramento will not make it in time for Liverpool. The 23-year-old has been sidelined since the calf injury that forced him out of England’s World Cup squad, and his recovery is still ongoing, away from Newcastle.
“The England defender is currently in the United States as he continues his rehabilitation from the calf injury that ruled him out of the World Cup,” Hope and Jones reported. “He could return on the second weekend of the campaign at Tottenham.”
That timeline effectively rules him out of the opening day. The earliest realistic return is Matchday 2, when Newcastle travel to Tottenham, assuming his rehab continues without a setback.
For Jaissle, that means planning for Liverpool without his first-choice right-back and with a left-back still playing catch-up.
Transfer pressure rises
Newcastle were already active in the market for full-backs. This latest injury picture only cranks up the urgency.
With Livramento out for Liverpool and Hall still building towards full match fitness, the club’s need to reinforce both flanks has become more than a strategic preference. It looks like a necessity.
As things stand, Newcastle are heading into their opener against Liverpool with a patched-up defence, a returning teenager in midfield, and a manager trying to balance caution with ambition.
The season has not even kicked off yet, and already the margins feel tight. How long can Newcastle ride that line before the transfer window slams shut?
