Newcastle United face an unwelcome headache heading into the break, with Anthony Elanga sidelined by an injury that has already ruled him out of club and country duty at a crucial moment in the season.

The winger missed Newcastle’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds United, a conspicuous absence given his status as a nailed-on starter under Matthias Jaissle and one of the side’s most productive attacking outlets. Sweden confirm Elanga blow

Any lingering hope that the issue was minor vanished when the Swedish FA announced that Elanga will miss all of Sweden’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Romania and Poland.

“A number of names are missing and several are due to injuries,” their statement read. “Isak Hien, who was injured during the World Cup, is still not available. Anthony Elanga has suffered an injury in the past week and will therefore miss the meeting.”

Instead of joining up with the national team, Elanga will undergo another MRI scan next week as Newcastle try to pin down the full extent of the damage. The club are braced for answers that could shape their next phase of the season.

Newcastle’s growing concern

In the short term, the picture is already clear. Elanga will sit out Newcastle’s home game against Hull City on Saturday, and when Sweden’s two Nations League fixtures are folded into the schedule, he is now guaranteed to miss at least four matches.

If the MRI confirms a more serious problem, Newcastle will be without a player who had exploded out of the blocks to start the campaign.
