Napoli Signs Benoit Badiashile on Loan from Chelsea

Napoli have moved decisively to strengthen their defence, striking a deal with Chelsea to bring Benoit Badiashile to Serie A on an initial loan with an option to buy.

The Italian club confirmed the transfer on Saturday, announcing that the 25-year-old French international arrives on a temporary basis with the possibility of making the move permanent at the end of the season. It draws a line under his current spell in London, where he struggled to lock down a regular starting spot amid the constant churn of managers at Stamford Bridge.

In their official statement, Napoli set out the framework of the agreement: they have acquired the sporting rights of Badiashile from Chelsea on a loan deal that includes a purchase option. The structure gives the Premier League side a clear path to recoup a sizeable chunk of the fee they paid to sign him from Monaco in January 2023.

According to Sky Sport transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli will pay €3 million for the season-long loan. The option to buy is set at €20m, a figure that could turn this into a smart piece of business for both clubs if Badiashile settles quickly in Italy. Some reports in the Italian press this week suggested the total package might climb as high as €27m once add-ons and bonuses are factored in, underlining the scale of the investment Napoli are prepared to make in their new centre-back.

For Chelsea, Badiashile’s exit is another notable name off the books in a summer of heavy turnover. He follows Marc Cucurella to the exit door after the Spaniard’s switch to Real Madrid, Andrey Santos’ move to Manchester United, and Trevoh Chalobah’s transfer to Como. Badiashile made 16 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea last season, never quite managing to establish himself as an undisputed starter.

Napoli, though, see opportunity where Chelsea saw congestion. The Frenchman becomes their second significant first-team addition of the window, arriving hot on the heels of Costantino Favasuli’s signing from US Catanzaro earlier in the week. With the club looking to reset and reinforce after a turbulent campaign, Badiashile’s profile – left-footed, athletic, comfortable in possession – fits neatly into their plans.

His journey to this point has already carried a hefty price tag. Chelsea paid around €37m to prise him from Monaco in January 2023, betting on his potential after he amassed 135 competitive appearances for the Ligue 1 side. Before leaving England, he had featured 42 times in the Premier League for Chelsea, flashes of authority and composure often interrupted by injuries and managerial reshuffles.

True to club tradition, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis broke cover first. A simple “Benvenuto Benoit” on X signalled the deal was effectively done, with the formal announcement following shortly after. The timing is no accident: Napoli launch their new Serie A campaign away to Genoa later today, and the message is clear. They intend to go into the season with fresh energy and a rebuilt backline.

Now the question shifts from paperwork to performance. Can Badiashile turn a stop-start spell in London into a statement season in Naples – and convince the club to trigger that permanent option next summer?
