Michael Kayode Shines in Premier League Opener for Brentford
Michael Kayode needed only one swing of his right leg to deepen the gloom around Roberto De Zerbi’s first Premier League outing with Tottenham.
Three minutes into the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium, the Italy U21 defender reacted quickest to a loose ball from the second phase of a corner and stabbed Brentford into a 3-0 lead. Any hope of a Spurs fightback vanished with that touch.
The damage had started early. Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the first half, Vitaly Janelt added a second, and Brentford walked into the interval in complete control. Kayode’s goal turned a strong performance into a statement on the opening weekend of the 2026-27 season.
For the 22-year-old, it was another milestone in a quietly rising career. This was only his second goal in the Premier League, following his strike in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers back in March. Brentford moved quickly in the summer to secure him long term, handing him a contract that runs until 2032, and he is already repaying that faith.
There was an extra twist to the story. Kayode scored against an Italian coach in De Zerbi, while Italy international Sandro Tonali started for Spurs. Kayode, capped 10 times at U21 level, is still waiting for his first senior call-up, but performances like this will not go unnoticed in Coverciano.
From youth nights in Empoli with Italy’s U21s to dominating a Premier League opener in West London, Kayode’s trajectory is clear. The question now is how long it will take before the Azzurri come calling.
