Team news: a stretched Madrid midfield
Mourinho’s biggest problem sits right in the heart of his team. Real Madrid are without three suspended midfielders: Eduardo Camavinga, Bernardo Silva and Arda Guler.
Camavinga and Guler are serving bans after their red cards in last season’s quarter-final defeat at Bayern Munich. Silva is also suspended following his dismissal for Manchester City in their last-16 loss to Real Madrid before making the move to Spain.
To make matters worse, Aurelian Tchouameni is a doubt with injury. If he fails to make it, Madrid’s midfield suddenly looks thin for a night when control and composure will be vital.
Inter’s situation is calmer. Federico Dimarco, forced off against Napoli on Saturday, is not expected to feature, but Chivu has no other major fitness concerns. That leaves him free to pick an aggressive side – and potentially hand a European stage to a familiar Premier League face.
Curtis Jones, the former Liverpool midfielder and England international, could make his Champions League debut for Inter. A first taste of this competition, at the Bernabeu, against Mourinho: it does not get much bigger.
