Marshall's Comeback Victory Over VCU: A 3-1 Triumph

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, and then tore VCU apart.

Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered strikes to claim a 3-1 win over the Rams on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, pushing their record to 2-0-2.

Early mistake, early punishment

Marshall handed VCU the perfect start. A defensive lapse left Ty Johnson clean through on goal, and he made no mistake. Johnson lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapped it in to silence the home crowd and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

It was a jolt for a Herd side still learning each other’s rhythms.

Head coach Chris Grassie pointed straight at that process, noting the number of new faces and the need for their passing and movement — their “communication” — to fully click. For long stretches in the first half, that chemistry flickered between sharp and shaky.

Apolinario ignites the response

Then Thiago Apolinario changed the mood with one swing of his right foot.

Eight minutes after VCU’s opener, Goncalo Machado laid the ball off to Apolinario, who spotted an opening from distance and let fly from nearly 40 yards. His strike caught VCU goalkeeper Manuel Monteiro off guard and ripped into the net, Apolinario’s third goal of the season dragging Marshall level at 1-1.

The Rams didn’t fold. They kept asking questions, stretching Marshall’s back line and forcing Obert into action. His best moment of the half came in the 31st minute, when he produced a key save to preserve the deadlock heading into the break.

Roberto swings the game

Marshall emerged from halftime with a different edge.

Just under five minutes into the second half, the pressure finally told. At the 49:26 mark, a loose ball fell to Joao Roberto just outside the 18-yard box. He reacted first, driving his shot past Monteiro to flip the game on its head and give the Herd a 2-1 lead.

From there, VCU chased. Marshall, though, had Obert.

The keeper stood tall again in the 59th minute, then delivered another important stop in the 85th as the Rams pushed desperately for an equalizer. Each save tightened Marshall’s grip on the match and drained belief from the visitors.

Romberg slams the door

VCU’s final mistake proved fatal.

In the 90th minute, a Rams error left Carl Romberg in alone. He took full advantage, slotting home the third goal to seal the result for Marshall and cap the comeback at 3-1.

What began with confusion and an early setback ended with control, conviction, and a reminder of the quality Grassie insists is still emerging.

Marshall stays home on Friday night, hosting Utah Valley at 7:15 p.m.

Another test. Another chance for this reshaped Herd to show just how quickly it can turn potential into something far more dangerous.
