Marco Palestra's Chelsea Debut and Italy Ambitions
Marco Palestra is finally back on the grass at Cobham – but his long-awaited Chelsea debut could come at a cost to his Italy ambitions.
The 21-year-old wing-back, a standout in pre-season after his big-money move from Atalanta and Cagliari for around €60m including add-ons, returned to full training today for the first time in weeks. Chelsea have kept a tight lid on the details: no clear word on the exact nature of the injury, nor which part of his leg was affected. Only that it was serious enough to wipe out the start of his season.
He has not played a single competitive minute for the Blues.
The plan, for now, is cautious. Palestra is not expected to be ready for more than a brief run-out this weekend, with a second-half cameo in the Premier League the best-case scenario being discussed around the club. For a player who lit up pre-season with his energy and aggression down the flank, it is a frustratingly slow introduction to English football.
And that slow start could have international consequences.
Roberto Mancini is preparing his Italy squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, but Palestra’s situation is complicated. He has not featured at all so far this campaign, and match fitness will be a major concern when the Azzurri coach makes his final decisions. A few late minutes off the bench for Chelsea might not be enough to convince him.
Palestra only broke into the senior Italy side in March 2026 and has just two caps to his name. His rise had been rapid, his move to London another step on a steep upward curve. Now he stands at a crossroads: fight his way into a new team in a new league, or risk seeing his early momentum with the national side stall before it has truly begun.
