Manchester United U19s 5–0 Sabah FK: Gabriel's Hat-trick Shines in Youth League Opener
Manchester United’s youngsters tore into their UEFA Youth League campaign on Thursday afternoon, dismantling Sabah FK 5–0 at Leigh Sports Village in a display of relentless attacking football.
With the competition mirroring the senior side’s Champions League group stage, United’s U21s boss stepped in to lead a makeshift U19 group. The mix-and-match label didn’t show. From the first whistle, this looked like a drilled, ruthless side.
Lightning start
The tone was set almost immediately. Inside two minutes, United were in front. Jim Thwaites whipped in a wide free-kick, and Amir Ibragimov darted to the near post to turn the delivery home. One set piece, one sharp run, one clinical touch. Sabah were stunned.
United smelt blood. JJ Gabriel, who would go on to own the afternoon, nearly doubled the lead soon after, unleashing a powerful drive from the edge of the box that forced the Sabah goalkeeper into a smart tip over the bar.
Sabah rarely escaped their own half. When they did, it was usually through the tireless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who tried to surge forward on the counter. Each time he broke, red shirts swarmed around him and the support never arrived. The visitors were isolated, penned in, and hanging on.
The pressure told again in the 16th minute. Bendito Mantato swung in a cross from the right that evaded everyone in the middle but not Jacob Watson at the far side. On his weaker right foot, Watson struck cleanly across goal to make it 2–0, a tidy finish that underlined United’s control.
There was a brief setback when Godwill Kukonki, starting for the first time this season, rolled his ankle and had to be withdrawn on 20 minutes, with Rafe McCormack coming on. The reshuffle changed nothing about the pattern of the game.
United kept coming. Just before the interval, they landed what felt like a knockout blow. Junior Brown saw his effort blocked in the area, but the loose ball dropped kindly for Gabriel. He reacted first, pouncing and firing in to put United 3–0 up on the stroke of half-time.
Gabriel takes over
If Sabah hoped the break would cool United’s intensity, they were disappointed. The young Reds came out with the same intent, still swarming, still creating.
Brown almost added a fourth with one of the moves of the match. Cutting in from the left, he curled a lovely effort towards the top-right corner, only to be denied by a spectacular save that briefly kept the scoreline respectable.
Chances kept piling up. United probed, switched play, and shot from all angles. Sabah clung on, deep in their own half, barely able to string passes together. Yet the scoreboard didn’t move again until late on.
Then Gabriel took centre stage.
Inside the box, he coolly sidestepped his marker, created half a yard and slid the ball into the far-right corner. A composed finish, 4–0, and his second of the afternoon. The hat-trick suddenly felt inevitable.
It arrived in style. Thwaites, already with an assist to his name, split the Sabah backline with a superb through ball, threading it perfectly into Gabriel’s path. The forward raced clear and made no mistake, completing his treble and sealing a 5–0 rout.
United didn’t just win; they overwhelmed. By the final whistle, they had racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah, by contrast, failed to muster a single effort towards Cameron Byrne-Hughes’ net. It was domination on the scoreboard and in the stats.
For a “makeshift” U19 side, this was some statement. If this is the standard they’re setting in the Youth League, the rest of the group has been warned.
