Manchester United Targets Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Successor
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is starting to take shape – and it could soon involve a familiar face returning to Manchester, this time in red.
Club scouts are tracking Germany’s World Cup standout Felix Nmecha, with the Borussia Dortmund midfielder viewed as a serious candidate to succeed Casemiro at the base of United’s engine room, according to reports in Germany.
From City prospect to World Cup headline
Nmecha’s name has been circulating among recruitment departments for some time, but his performances this summer have pushed him firmly into the spotlight.
The 25-year-old announced himself on the global stage by opening the scoring in Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao, lashing a first-time, right-footed strike into the top corner from around 20 yards. It was the sort of finish that turns heads. His all-round display kept them there.
Box-to-box running, timing in the tackle, and an instinct for shutting down counterattacks have underlined why top clubs are circling. He looks physically ready, tactically disciplined and technically sharp – the modern profile United have been crying out for as Casemiro edges towards the exit.
A Manchester return on the cards?
Nmecha knows the city well. He came through the academy at Manchester City, but never quite broke through into Pep Guardiola’s senior setup. A productive loan spell at Anderlecht in 2020–21 opened the door to a permanent move to Wolfsburg, where his development accelerated and ultimately earned him a switch to Dortmund.
Now, Sky Sports Deutschland reports that United are among a cluster of elite clubs monitoring his situation. The twist? City, his former club and United’s neighbours, are also credited with an interest. A tug-of-war across Manchester for a player who once wore sky blue would add another layer to an already fierce rivalry.
Real Madrid are in the frame as well, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to be an admirer. When Mourinho wants a midfielder, the market tends to feel it.
Dortmund hold the cards – for now
Any deal will be complicated. Dortmund are under no pressure to sell. Nmecha is tied to the Bundesliga side until 2030, a contract that hands the German club considerable leverage.
There is a release clause, but it only becomes active in the summer of 2027 and is set at around £61m. For now, Dortmund’s stance is clear: they expect Nmecha to stay through the coming seasons, not depart in the current window.
His agent, Tobi Alabi, has echoed that message. Speaking to Bild, Alabi stressed that Nmecha still has two years remaining on his current deal and highlighted the role Dortmund have played in his rise, describing the club’s trust and platform as central to his development. He framed the current interest as a natural consequence of strong performances, while underlining that Nmecha’s focus is on giving everything for Dortmund and helping the team hit its targets.
In other words, no transfer push, no public agitation, no short-term drama.
United’s midfield puzzle
United, though, are clearly reshaping their midfield. The club are on the verge of confirming the £39m signing of Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta, with the deal expected to be wrapped up while the midfielder is on World Cup duty.
Ederson brings bite, energy and ball-carrying from deep. Nmecha, should United decide to test Dortmund’s resolve in the coming windows, would add height, versatility and a two-way presence that could gradually phase out Casemiro’s role.
For now, Nmecha remains a Dortmund player, a World Cup performer with heavyweight admirers and a long contract. But once a player starts lighting up tournaments and drawing glances from both sides of Manchester and Real Madrid, the question is rarely if the battle begins – only when.
