Manchester United Revamp Midfield: Ederson and Mateus Fernandes on the Radar
Manchester United are preparing for a summer of major surgery in midfield, and the first cuts are already clear. Casemiro will walk away on a free transfer, Manuel Ugarte is being readied for sale, and a younger, more dynamic core is being built in their place.
The club have decided not to renew Casemiro’s deal despite a superb campaign from the 34-year-old. He has been one of United’s most reliable performers this season, but the decision is cold and calculated: the next version of this team cannot be built around a veteran holding midfielder.
Ugarte, signed for £50.5 million and billed as the long-term answer in that role, has not convinced. United are now actively preparing to move him on, accepting that the investment has not delivered the control or authority they expected in the middle of the pitch.
That double departure forces a reset. It also explains the urgency behind United’s aggressive move for Atalanta’s Ederson and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.
Ederson deal advanced
Ederson appears closest to the door at Old Trafford. According to talkSPORT, United are “closing in” on a deal for the Brazilian, with a package that could rise to around £43m.
Talks with Atalanta are already at an advanced stage, and the 24-year-old has given the green light to the move. He is ready to sign a five-year contract, a clear sign that United see him as a cornerstone of their next midfield, not just another squad piece.
The plan is simple: secure Ederson first, then turn fully towards Fernandes.
United push to the front for Mateus Fernandes
United had long earmarked Elliot Anderson as a priority target, only to watch Manchester City move into pole position. That setback has sharpened their focus on Fernandes, who has emerged as the next major piece of the rebuild.
CaughtOffside report that United now “lead the race” for the 21-year-old and have become the “strongest contenders” after accelerating talks with his representatives. The groundwork is more advanced at Old Trafford than anywhere else, and that matters in a crowded market.
There is no shortage of rivals. Arsenal are interested and see Fernandes as a possible successor to Christian Norgaard. Chelsea, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are all monitoring his situation as well.
The difference is intent. United have moved fastest, and they hold two important cards. Fernandes is keen to line up alongside his compatriot Bruno Fernandes, and he wants Champions League football in a United shirt. That ambition aligns neatly with the club’s own plans for a refreshed, European-ready midfield.
Earlier reports suggested West Ham would demand up to £80m for the youngster. CaughtOffside now claim his price has dropped into the €50–60m range (£43–52m) after West Ham’s relegation, a figure that suddenly makes a double swoop with Ederson financially plausible.
A third signing on the horizon?
The rebuild might not stop at two. If the numbers stretch, United could add a third midfielder to complete the overhaul.
On May 20, the Daily Mail’s Manchester United correspondent Chris Wheeler revealed that the club are planning a £20m move for another backup option, with Southampton’s Shea Charles identified as a target. It would be a quieter deal than the headline moves for Ederson and Fernandes, but an important one for depth and rotation across a long season.
The picture is clear. Casemiro is being allowed to leave, Ugarte is on the market, and United are driving hard for Ederson and Mateus Fernandes, with Charles in reserve. Old Trafford’s midfield is being ripped up and rewritten in real time.
The only question now is whether United can finish the job before Europe’s heavyweights close in on the same names.
