Manchester United Dominates Ipswich Town 5-2 with Bruno's Hat-Trick
Old Trafford wanted a response. It got a demolition.
Manchester United tore into Ipswich Town with a 5-2 win on Sunday, powered by a ruthless hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes and a sharp supporting act from Bryan Mbeumo. The performance didn’t fix every concern, especially at the back, but it did remind everyone how devastating this side can be when their captain catches fire.
Bruno’s Statement Game
This was Bruno Fernandes at full throttle.
Transferred out by more than 244,000 FPL managers before Gameweek 2, he responded with his best-ever score in a single match: 23 points. Three goals. One assist. Maximum bonus. Eight shots. Three chances created. Total control.
His first goal set the tone. Marcelino Nunez slipped, Bruno pounced, and Ipswich were punished without mercy. No hesitation, no second invitation.
The second arrived from the spot. He sent Kjell Scherpen the wrong way, a calm, emphatic answer to those pre-season penalty misses that had sparked doubts over his status from 12 yards. Any uncertainty evaporated as soon as the ball hit the net.
The hat-trick came with a neat finish after Mbeumo’s initial effort had been blocked. Right place, right reaction, right finish. By then, Old Trafford was in full voice and Ipswich were hanging on.
And still, Bruno wasn’t done.
Mbeumo Delivers – Eventually
Fernandes capped his afternoon by sliding a lovely pass into the path of Mbeumo, who took his chance to make it 5-2 and walk away with 11 FPL points.
It could have been even better for the forward. Earlier in the game he somehow failed to convert from two yards out after a low cross from Marcus Rashford. The chance carried an xG of 0.92 – the sort that usually ends with the ball nestling in the net and the goalkeeper looking helpless.
That miss didn’t derail United’s attacking rhythm. Once the game opened up after the break, they carved Ipswich apart repeatedly, pouring forward with confidence and variety. From an attacking standpoint, this was the most fluid they’ve looked this season.
Next up is Everton away, and the numbers are inviting. The Toffees have given up more big chances than any other side in the first two Gameweeks. On this evidence, United’s forwards will fancy themselves.
Mainoo Anchors the Midfield
Behind the headline acts, Kobbie Mainoo quietly stitched the performance together.
The young midfielder impressed in the centre of the pitch, racking up 14 defensive contributions (DefCon) and giving United a platform to attack from. His work without the ball underpinned the aggression further forward.
Michael Carrick knew it, too.
“He was very, very good for a first start back. We’ve managed him a little bit and we’ve got good midfielders so, it’s about trying to make the best of the combinations. I understand Bruno getting a lot of credit today, and he deserves that as well, but I thought Kobbie was immense in the middle of the pitch for us and underpinned the performance of the team,” the United boss said.
Rashford also looked sharp down the left, driving at defenders and supplying that gilt-edged chance for Mbeumo. With Mainoo knitting things together and Rashford stretching play, United finally had balance between structure and flair.
Shaw Struggles as Defensive Questions Linger
Not everyone in red enjoyed the afternoon.
Luke Shaw endured a difficult day up against Ipswich winger Abdul Fatawu. The full-back never truly got to grips with his direct opponent and was withdrawn in the 73rd minute.
Before coming off, he appeared in some discomfort, prompting suggestions of a possible knock. For now, though, there has been no confirmation from Shaw or Carrick of any injury issue.
United’s attack bailed them out, but the defensive record remains a concern. Four goals conceded in two matches is not the platform a title-chasing side usually builds from.
Harry Maguire at least added something at the other end, his deflected second-half strike earning him four FPL points. Still, the broader question remains: can this back line be trusted when the games tighten and the margins shrink?
Enciso Shines in Defeat, Emersonn Blow for Ipswich
Ipswich didn’t come just to make up the numbers. For long spells in the first half, they asked serious questions.
Julio Enciso was again their standout performer. Bright, busy, always demanding the ball, he created their late consolation by supplying the assist for substitute Chuba Akpom’s strike – his second assist of the season. Earlier, he had broken through one-on-one but failed to finish, a key moment as United clung on before turning the tide.
The visitors had stunned Old Trafford by taking the lead through Leif Davis, who then almost grabbed a second shortly after. At that stage, Ipswich’s attacking intent looked like it might produce a shock.
Then came the turning point.
Emersonn, who had been involved in their forward play, was forced off at half-time with a knee problem after an awkward landing. The loss hurt them badly.
“We’re hopeful it’s not serious. It was like a landing and a jarring of it, so it was a bit too painful for him to carry on. That was a blow, of course. But we’re hopeful that it’s not going to be anything too serious. I’m hoping that when we get in tomorrow and when he’s checked, he’s feeling a bit better. Same again on Tuesday, there’ll be some more checks. It could be anything at this stage, but with the initial signs, we’re hopeful,” Gary O’Neil said via TWDT.
Without Emersonn, Ipswich’s structure crumbled. Jacob Greaves endured a nightmare spell, scoring an own goal and conceding a penalty, and United never looked back.
One positive arrived in the form of Exequiel Palacios, who came on in the second half and offered a glimpse of what he might bring. Ipswich will need his composure and quality quickly.
Because the schedule shows no mercy. Liverpool await on Friday in the Gameweek 3 curtain-raiser, and after being torn apart by United’s attack, Ipswich now have to walk into another storm. How they respond to this setback will say plenty about where their season is really heading.
