Manchester United vs Ipswich: Mount's Return and Carrick's Key Decisions

Old Trafford expects a reaction. It usually does, but this time it feels non‑negotiable.

Manchester United’s season started with a whimper at Hull, a 2-0 defeat that exposed a blunt attack and raised early doubts about Michael Carrick’s set-up. On Sunday, with Ipswich coming to Manchester for United’s first home game of the campaign, the margin for another flat display already feels thin.

Mount’s Return Changes the Picture

Carrick at least walks into this one with a genuine boost. Mason Mount is back.

The midfielder has returned to full training after the ankle injury he picked up against Paris Saint-Germain in pre-season and is now in contention for a place in the squad. Throwing him straight into the XI would be a gamble, but just having him available gives Carrick a creative option he sorely lacked at Hull.

United looked short of ideas and even shorter on tempo last weekend. Mount’s movement between the lines and his willingness to receive the ball under pressure offer a different rhythm. Even if he starts on the bench, he suddenly becomes a card Carrick can play if the game drifts.

Crucially, there were no new injuries from the Hull defeat. In a summer disrupted by fitness issues, that alone counts as a small win.

Rashford Ready to Step In

The other obvious change is staring Carrick in the face. Marcus Rashford is pushing hard to start.

Used only from the bench on opening weekend, Rashford still looked one of United’s few players capable of stretching Hull. United lacked pace, direct running and any real jeopardy in the final third. That is Rashford’s territory.

If he comes in, Patrick Dorgu is the likely casualty. The expected reshuffle would see Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes operating behind Matheus Cunha, with Rashford offering penetration from the left.

Up front, Benjamin Sesko is still working his way back after a shin problem, so Cunha is set to continue as the central striker. He toiled at Hull without much service; at Old Trafford, with more aggressive support around him, the expectation will be very different.

Midfield Under the Microscope

If there is one area Carrick cannot afford to get wrong again, it is midfield.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos struggled to impose themselves at Hull. United were too easy to play through, too slow to regain control when they lost it. That has opened the door for Kobbie Mainoo.

The young midfielder is pressing for a recall and looks the most likely to come back into the XI. The probable solution is Mainoo alongside Tielemans, with Fernandes pushed higher, freed to influence the game closer to Cunha and Rashford rather than firefighting deeper.

It would be a statement of trust in Mainoo’s ability to bring both control and intensity – exactly what Carrick’s side lacked in the opener.

At the back, the manager has less room to manoeuvre. Injuries still bite into his options, so the defensive unit that started at Hull is expected to remain largely intact.

Baleba’s Debut Put on Ice

The bigger frustration comes in midfield depth. Carlos Baleba will not be involved.

The £70 million signing from Brighton arrived carrying an ankle ligament injury picked up during a pre-season training camp in Austria. The club expect him to be sidelined for “two or three weeks”, delaying a debut that was meant to inject power and presence into Carrick’s midfield.

Amad Diallo is also out for “a little bit longer”, while Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte remain unavailable. For now, Carrick must work with what he has and hope his key figures can shoulder the load.
