Manchester United Faces Early Crisis Ahead of Ipswich Clash
Manchester United will limp into their Old Trafford home opener on Sunday with a threadbare squad and the weight of an early-season crisis already pressing down on Michael Carrick.
A 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend has stripped away any sense of calm around United’s new campaign. The performance was flat, the result alarming. Carrick now has to find a response without at least nine senior players when Ipswich arrive in Manchester.
New £70m signing made to wait
The headline addition of the week, Carlos Baleba, will not be there to help. United splashed £70million to prise the midfielder from Brighton, a statement signing intended to inject power and control into Carrick’s engine room.
For now, he can only watch.
Baleba picked up an ankle issue in pre-season and, as Carrick made clear, the club always knew his debut would be delayed. The manager expects him to be out for “maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks,” insisting it is “no major issue” and that it will be “great to have him back.”
United need him already. They will have to cope without him.
Amad and Mount on different tracks
In attack, Carrick will again be without Amad. The £37m signing from 2021, who missed the defeat at Hull, remains sidelined with what the manager described as a minor training-ground injury.
“Amad won't be involved, he'll be out for a little bit longer,” Carrick said. The tone was matter-of-fact. The absence is a problem. United lack craft and unpredictability in the final third; Amad provides both when fit.
Mason Mount, at least, offers a flicker of good news. The midfielder will not be risked against Ipswich, but his recovery is gathering pace.
“Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive,” Carrick confirmed. Mount’s return to full involvement cannot come quickly enough for a side searching for tempo and direction.
De Ligt close, but not quite there
At the back, Matthijs De Ligt remains a long-term absentee, though his situation has finally turned a corner. The Dutch defender has been out for an extended spell but is now back in full training.
“Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time,” Carrick said. “But he's training and it's great to have him back. He won't be involved, but he's in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that's a good bonus for us really, at this stage, to have him back.”
United’s defensive frailties at Hull underlined how valuable De Ligt’s eventual return could be. For now, Carrick must patch things up without him.
Reserve goalkeeper Tom Heaton will also be missing after suffering an injury in the pre-season friendly against PSG. There is no clear timeframe yet for the veteran’s return, leaving United light on experienced cover between the posts.
Ipswich travel with problems of their own
Ipswich arrive with momentum after a win over Sunderland, but they are not untouched by injury.
- Jaden Philogene, absent for that victory, continues to struggle with an ankle problem and will miss the trip to Old Trafford.
- Florentino Luis, ruled out with a calf injury and also missing against the Black Cats, remains unavailable.
- Azor Matusiwa, another absentee from last week’s squad, is sidelined again with a thigh complaint.
So both managers walk into this game with lengthy medical bulletins and limited room to manoeuvre. The difference is the backdrop: Ipswich come buoyed by three points; United come under scrutiny, already chasing their first win of the season.
Carrick must somehow turn a depleted dressing room into a defiant one. With Old Trafford watching and Ipswich sensing vulnerability, how many more setbacks can this United side afford before the season’s story hardens into something far more unforgiving?
