Manchester United v Ipswich: Carrick Faces Early Pressure at Old Trafford
Date: Sunday, August 30
Kick-off: 4.30pm
Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester
Competition: Premier League
TV: Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League
The season is barely a week old and already Old Trafford feels edgy.
Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at promoted Hull on the opening weekend was more than a bad day at the office. It exposed old weaknesses, raised fresh questions about recruitment and left Michael Carrick staring at an early test of authority as Ipswich arrive in Manchester.
Hull bullied United at set-pieces. A corner for the first, a free-kick for the second, and a back line that never looked comfortable. For a club that spent the summer talking about progress after finishing third and securing a Champions League return, the opening act was a jolt.
Carrick, appointed permanently in May after steering United back into Europe’s elite, has not had the overhaul many supporters expected. Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow and Carlos Baleba are the only new faces so far in a squad still short in key areas, most notably at the back.
Defensive doubts, attacking firepower
The partnership of Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven at centre-back in that Hull defeat felt makeshift and looked it. It is unlikely to be Carrick’s long-term plan, but it underlined how thin United are in central defence. Out wide, Luke Shaw continues to struggle against raw pace, while Noussair Mazraoui has yet to convince on the opposite flank.
United, though, are not short of threat going the other way. Bruno Fernandes remains the creative heartbeat, Matheus Cunha offers movement and sharp finishing, and Bryan Mbeumo has become a reliable source of shots and goals.
Marcus Rashford is the other key piece. Left on the bench at Hull, he came on at half-time and still created four chances. That impact alone should force him into the starting XI ahead of Patrick Dorgu, with Carrick needing more incision and urgency from the first whistle.
Ipswich, who have not won at Old Trafford since 1984, are unlikely to keep United out for 90 minutes. But this is not a side turning up for a photo opportunity.
Ipswich arrive in form and unafraid
Gary O’Neil’s team opened their campaign with a sharp 2-1 win over Sunderland, a performance that carried the swagger of a group enjoying their football. Julio Enciso was the standout, his pace, dribbling and composure driving Ipswich forward and constantly unsettling the Black Cats.
That momentum rolled into the EFL Cup, where Ipswich beat Leicester 3-1. The scoreline showcased their attacking depth but also hinted at defensive vulnerability. They are open, they take risks, and they accept that games might become chaotic.
It suits them. Ipswich ended pre-season with four straight wins and have stretched their unbeaten run to seven competitive matches, a sequence that includes just one defeat in their last eight away games. They are playing with freedom, and that makes them dangerous visitors at a time when United are searching for certainty.
Given United’s form and Ipswich’s confidence, backing the Tractor Boys to avoid defeat – win or draw – has clear appeal.
Set-piece scars and a Nunez opportunity
Hull’s success from dead balls last weekend will not have gone unnoticed in the Ipswich camp. Marcelino Nunez, the Chile international, is the primary set-piece taker and carries a real chance of registering his first assist of the season at Old Trafford.
Nunez delivered eight assists in the Championship last term, joint-eighth in the division, and now has serious aerial targets to aim for. Issa Diop, the 6ft 5in centre-back, and 6ft 1in striker Emersonn give Ipswich height and muscle in the box. Against a United defence that already looked fragile from corners and free-kicks, one clean delivery could be enough.

Bet Builder focus
- Bryan Mbeumo to have a shot on target
Mbeumo has hit the target at least once in each of his last three appearances for Manchester United, and with United expected to dominate territory at home, he should test the goalkeeper again. - Under ten corners
United’s last two matches have produced fewer than ten corners, and six of Ipswich’s last seven have followed the same pattern. Both sides prefer measured build-up over relentless crossing, which can keep corner counts down. - Issa Diop to be shown a card
Diop’s aggressive style is no secret. He picked up three bookings at the World Cup with Morocco and has a tendency to dive into challenges and switch off at key moments. Against United’s movement in the final third, he is a clear card candidate.
Bet Builder pays 7-1 with bet365.
