Manchester United's Champions League Return: Carrick's Selection Dilemma
Manchester United’s Champions League nights are back. After three years in the wilderness, the floodlights at Old Trafford will burn a little brighter on Thursday when Sabah FK arrive from Azerbaijan for their first-ever taste of the group stage.
It is a soft landing on paper. In reality, Michael Carrick walks a tightrope.
Three days after Sabah, Manchester City cross town for the derby on Sunday, Sept. 13. Two high-stakes games, one stretched squad, and a manager who has to juggle minutes, egos and injuries in the space of 72 hours.
Carrick’s selection headache
The treatment room has filled up at the worst possible time. Matthijs de Ligt (back), Manuel Ugarte (knee), Carlos Baleba (ankle), Amad Diallo (ankle) and Tom Heaton (hamstring) are all ruled out. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford hover in that uneasy “doubtful” zone, their workloads likely to be managed with City in mind.
So Carrick must lean on depth. Not just to get through Sabah, but to keep his key men fresh for Erling Haaland and company.
The good news for United: even with a lengthy absentee list, there is still more than enough quality to set the tone in Group play against a side that has never before stepped onto this stage.
How United could line up vs Sabah
Carrick is expected to field a side strong enough to avoid any early drama, but with just enough rotation to protect his stars. This is how Manchester United could shape up on Thursday night:
- Goalkeeper: Senne Lammens The Belgian is poised to get the nod, a chance to stake his claim behind the established No. 1 while giving valuable rest before the derby.
- Defenders: Diogo Dalot, Lenny Yoro, Lisandro Martínez, Noussair Mazraoui Dalot and Mazraoui offer energy and width from full-back, while Martínez’s aggression should anchor the back line. Beside him, Yoro’s inclusion would inject youth and composure, a calculated risk against a less-fancied opponent.
- Holding midfielders: Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans Mainoo brings tempo and bravery on the ball, the kind of player who can control a European night from deep. Tielemans adds experience and range of passing, ideal for breaking down what is likely to be a compact Sabah block.
- Attacking midfielders: Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha Fernandes remains the creative heartbeat, even if Carrick chooses to manage his minutes. Around him, Mbeumo’s direct running from wide areas and Cunha’s ability to drift between the lines should stretch Sabah and open lanes for the striker.
- Forward: Benjamin Šeško All eyes will be on the Slovenian. A home Champions League debut, a visiting defence still adjusting to this level, and a stage perfectly set for a statement performance.
Sabah arrive as unknowns to most of Old Trafford. United, by contrast, know exactly what these nights are supposed to look and feel like. The question now is not whether they belong back in the Champions League – it is how quickly Carrick’s side can turn a long-awaited return into a serious campaign.
