Mahmoud Trezeguet Injured: Egypt and Al-Riyadh Face Setback

Al-Riyadh have been dealt a major setback – and so have Egypt. On Wednesday, the Saudi club confirmed via their official X account that Egyptian international Mahmoud Hassan "Trezeguet" has suffered a torn hamstring muscle and will be out for four weeks.

The injury struck brutally early. In the sixth round of the Saudi Roshn League against Al-Khaleej on Monday, Trezeguet went down in the 13th minute. He left the pitch in tears, a worrying sight for both his club and national team coaches.

Medical examinations later confirmed the worst: a hamstring tear. Al-Riyadh announced that the winger will return to Cairo to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of Egypt's medical staff, a move that underlines how central he remains to the national setup.

For Hossam Hassan, it is a serious problem at a critical moment.

Egypt’s upcoming camp, scheduled to start on 17 September, will now go ahead without one of its most reliable attacking outlets. The timeline of four weeks rules Trezeguet out of the next two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

The Pharaohs host Angola on Friday 25 September at Cairo Stadium, a fixture that was already being circled as an early test of Hassan’s tenure. Four days later, on Tuesday 29 September, they travel to Juba to face South Sudan.

Trezeguet will watch both from the sidelines.

A former Aston Villa winger, he has long been one of Egypt’s most prominent attacking options, valued for his work rate, direct running, and big-game experience at international level. Losing that blend of edge and maturity in the final third forces Egypt into a rethink just as competitive action intensifies.

For Al-Riyadh, the absence bites too. They signed a proven international, only to see him sidelined just as the Saudi Roshn League season begins to take shape.

Now the focus shifts to recovery. Four weeks is the estimate. Egypt and Al-Riyadh will hope it does not stretch any longer, because both campaigns already look harder without Trezeguet on the pitch.
