Leon Goretzka's Injury Delays Aston Villa Debut
Leon Goretzka’s Aston Villa career is on hold before it has even begun.
The Germany midfielder has revealed he will be out for “several weeks”, a significant setback that delays his debut for Unai Emery’s side and rules him out of Jurgen Klopp’s first Germany camp.
Goretzka, who arrived at Villa Park on a free transfer late in August after leaving Bayern Munich, confirmed the news on Monday evening in a message to supporters on social media.
“My body has reacted”
Speaking directly to Villa fans on Instagram, the 31-year-old laid bare his frustration at breaking down just as he felt ready to launch the next chapter of his career.
“Dear Villans, first of all, thank you for the incredible welcome,” he wrote. “After my first few days at this club, the feeling that I'm exactly where I'm meant to be has grown stronger with each passing day.
“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch. It's frustrating, but I need this short break now to come back at full strength.”
It is a cruel twist in timing. Goretzka, capped 73 times by Germany, had just come off a busy summer, featuring in three of his country’s four World Cup matches before their round-of-32 exit to Paraguay. He was expected to stride straight into a central role for Klopp, who has replaced Julian Nagelsmann and is gearing up for Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands, Greece and Serbia.
Instead, the new national team coach must redraw his plans. Goretzka will miss the upcoming international break entirely, leaving Klopp to shape his first training camp without one of the most experienced midfielders in the squad.
Villa blow amid rocky start
Back in Birmingham, the news lands at a delicate moment. Villa have stumbled out of the blocks in the Premier League, sitting 17th after taking just one point from their opening three games.
Now they head into a Champions League campaign with another problem to solve. Emery’s team travel to face Club Brugge on Tuesday, still waiting to see their marquee late-summer signing kick a ball in claret and blue.
The Villa manager did not hide his disappointment at losing such a high-profile addition before he could integrate him into the side, but he chose to stress the depth at his disposal rather than dwell on what he is missing.
“Goretzka's injury and his problems are a little frustrating, but we have players who can replace him, like Ross Barkley, Joao Gomes, Lamare Bogarde and Boubacar Kamara,” Emery said.
For now, those names must carry the load in midfield as Villa try to steady their domestic form and cope with the demands of Europe.
Eyes on recovery
Goretzka, for his part, has already turned his attention to making sure this setback is a short one. He intends to use the pause in club action and the international window to reset his body and return ready to drive Villa forward.
“I'll use the coming days, including the international break, to recover fully and I'll be back ready to fight and give everything for you and for Villa,” he added. “Can't wait to see you on the pitch soon. Thank you for your support. Leon.”
Villa signed him to change the temperature of big games, to add experience and authority to a side trying to prove it belongs at Europe’s top table. The wait for that influence just got longer — and so did the list of questions hanging over a season that is already under pressure.
