Lamine Yamal is back, and he didn’t bother with a gentle reintroduction.

The 19-year-old lit up Mestalla on Sunday night, scoring twice in FC Barcelona’s ruthless 5-0 demolition of Valencia, his first goals of this La Liga campaign and a loud reminder of why he’s already one of the league’s headline acts.

Early strike, family salute

He needed just six minutes.

Released into space, Yamal met the ball in full stride and improvised a finish that summed up his talent and audacity. He swung his leg up to waist height and, with the tip of his toes, diverted the ball past the keeper and into the net to open the scoring.

The celebration was as sharp as the finish. Thumb to his mouth, he dedicated the goal to his toddler brother, Keyne, who was reportedly celebrating his fourth birthday on the day of the match. Keyne, alongside Yamal’s mother, watched from the stands as the teenager took over the stage.

Barcelona didn’t ease off. Fermín López struck, Raphinha added another, and then Rodri – Yamal’s Spain teammate and freshly crowned Golden Ball winner – joined the party with a goal of his own as the visitors ran riot and stretched the scoreline.

The pressure never really relented, and it was fitting that Yamal had the final word.

In the 84th minute, Dani Olmo slid a pass into his path. Yamal shaped his body, opened up his left foot and whipped the ball across himself and into the net, sealing the 5-0 rout and bookending the match with his brace.

By full-time, Barcelona’s record stood at 4-0, top of the La Liga table and looking every bit like defending champions. For Yamal, who missed the end of last season with a hamstring injury after already shattering age records for both club and league, this felt like a statement.

Barcelona lifted the La Liga title in May. Performances like this suggest their young star is intent on making sure that was only the beginning.
