Killian Phillips Joins Republic of Ireland Squad for UEFA Nations League
Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to make his mark with the Republic of Ireland after a bruising weekend of injuries forced Heimir Hallgrimsson into a reshuffle.
The St Mirren midfielder has been drafted into the squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, stepping in after Jamie McGrath and Harvey Vale were both ruled out.
McGrath, of Hibernian, and Queens Park Rangers’ Vale each broke down in the warm-up before their club games against Aberdeen and Preston North End. Both withdrawals immediately cast doubt over their availability for international duty, and confirmation arrived on Monday morning that neither would feature in this window.
That opened the door for Phillips.
The 22-year-old will join up with the squad in Dublin today, linking with his new team-mates before Ireland fly to Pristina for Thursday’s Nations League opener against Kosovo.
From there, the schedule turns demanding. The Boys in Green head to Debrecen, Hungary, to face Israel, then return to Dublin for a home clash with Austria at the Aviva Stadium. The window wraps up with a second meeting against Israel, this time in Bačka Topola, Serbia.
Hallgrimsson’s options remain strong despite the double setback, with a squad that blends Premier League, Championship and European experience across the pitch.
