Kaizer Chiefs Lead Maxwele Transfer Battle Against Orlando Pirates
Kaizer Chiefs have moved first. Orlando Pirates are still lurking. And somewhere in the middle of this classic South African transfer scrap stands a 25-year-old midfielder whose future now rests with Golden Arrows chairlady Mato Madlala.
With the transfer window opening on 1 July, the battle for Maxwele is beginning to sharpen. According to respected Kaizer Chiefs insider Innocent Mkhize, Amakhosi have already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Golden Arrows star as they look to inject fresh energy into their midfield for the new campaign.
On paper, that’s a major breakthrough. In reality, the deal is far from done.
Madlala is understood to favour a different outcome. Mkhize claims the Arrows boss would rather see Maxwele make the switch to Orlando Pirates than head to Naturena, a twist that immediately turns a straightforward negotiation into a full-blown derby-sized transfer saga.
It sets up the prospect of another bruising off-field contest between South Africa’s two biggest clubs, both of whom rate the midfielder highly and both of whom know exactly what he could bring to their engine room.
Maxwele has earned that attention the hard way.
After Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in 2025, he arrived at Golden Arrows as a free agent, needing to rebuild his career and reputation. He did more than that. He became a fixture. In his first season with Arrows, the Mthatha-born midfielder featured regularly, clocking 23 league appearances and adding further minutes in cup competitions. Across all tournaments he produced three goals and one assist – modest numbers on the surface, but the statistics only tell part of the story.
Coaches and scouts have been drawn to his profile: a relentless runner, aggressive in the press, always willing to carry the ball through the lines. He can operate centrally, dictating the tempo, or slide into wider attacking zones and stretch defences. That blend of work rate and versatility makes him the kind of player who raises the intensity of a team almost by default.
Clubs chasing titles and trophies crave that sort of dynamism. Chiefs, in particular, have been actively searching for more bite and mobility in midfield, and tying down personal terms with Maxwele is a clear signal of intent. Pirates, long-time admirers, see the same qualities and know that losing him to their fiercest rivals would sting.
For the moment, Amakhosi have won the first leg of this contest: the player is on board, at least on a personal level. The decisive move now lies with Golden Arrows and Madlala as the window gathers pace.
Whether Maxwele ends up in gold and black at Naturena or in black and white at Mayfair will say plenty about who really holds the power in this transfer market – and about which giant lands the extra edge in the battles to come.
