Julian Alvarez's Future at Atletico Madrid: Tensions Rise Ahead of Villarreal Clash
Julian Alvarez stays in the spotlight at Atletico Madrid, even without kicking a ball in La Liga this season.
The Argentine forward still dreams of a move to FC Barcelona as the transfer window ticks towards its close. Atletico’s response has been blunt: absolutely not. Especially not to Barça.
Alvarez missed Atletico’s opening game of the 2026/27 campaign after returning late from World Cup duty, a quiet absence that briefly cooled the noise around his future. That calm will not last.
A tense return on the horizon
Diego Simeone has brought the issue back to the centre of the stage. The Atletico coach confirmed that Alvarez will be in the squad for tomorrow’s clash with Villarreal.
“Yes, he’ll be in tomorrow’s squad and he’s better. He’s progressing at his own pace. We’ll try to manage a complicated, difficult match against a tough opponent with good players,” Simeone said, speaking to Mundo Deportivo.
Leaving him out again would have been the easy option. It would also have delayed a potentially awkward reunion with a fanbase that has already made its feelings clear about a player who appears to be looking elsewhere.
Atletico do not return to the Metropolitano until 16 September, when they host Osasuna. Between now and then, they face three straight away fixtures against Sevilla, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. Had Alvarez been omitted against Villarreal, his first home appearance of the season would likely have come after the transfer window closed, with a handful of road games to let his football do the talking and soften the mood.
Instead, Atletico want him involved now. On the pitch, because they believe he can help them win. Off it, because they see his presence as a way to shut down the speculation.
Simeone draws a line
Simeone did not hide his frustration with the narrative building around Alvarez and Barcelona. He echoed the stance of CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin and took aim at those he believes are trying to stir trouble.
“Let it be clear, because at a moment when people are waiting for division and trying to create conflict and uncertainty, there is no uncertainty. Miguel Angel Gil Marin spoke clearly yesterday,” he said.
No room for doubt. No door left ajar.
Simeone then underlined Alvarez’s importance to his plans this season.
“For me, he’s an extremely important player for achieving our sporting objectives.
“We’ll be with him and look after him from a sporting perspective. Why? Because he’s our player. As long as he’s at Atletico, I’ll look after him.”
The message is simple: as long as Alvarez wears red and white, he is central, not peripheral.
Between desire and duty
Simeone admitted he has spoken directly with Alvarez. The coach, though, stopped short of claiming to fully understand what is going on in the striker’s head.
“It’s difficult to say how another person feels because I’m not that person. What I see is that he’s working in the best possible way, working with his teammates and showing respect to everyone,” he said.
So the picture is clear but complicated. A player who still hopes for Barcelona. A club that refuses to sell. A coach who insists on his value and backs him publicly. A fanbase that may need convincing.
The next act comes against Villarreal. How Alvarez handles it – and how Atletico’s supporters respond – could shape not just his immediate future, but the tone of Atletico’s season.
