Chelsea's Excitement for Palestra's Versatility
On the eve of Chelsea’s Premier League opener at Fulham on Monday night, Alonso could not hide his excitement about one of his newest pieces on the board.
The Spanish coach picked out Palestra’s Italian schooling as the trait that makes him stand out in an English landscape still getting used to such tactical flexibility.
“I would say it's probably unusual in England because, in Italy for example, it's quite common, and he has had this education in Italian football to play both profiles,” Alonso explained, drawing a clear line between the defender’s background and his adaptability. “It doesn't matter if you are right-footed or left-footed, just that you are versatile. So he has this option, this energy. He's something different, maybe not that common here, but in Italy it's quite common.”
That versatility gives Chelsea a rare card to play. Palestra can flip sides, adjust angles, and answer different tactical questions without the usual disruption. For a manager still moulding his squad, that kind of player can change the rhythm of a season.
Alonso’s praise did not stop at what Palestra offers on the pitch. The early days at Cobham have already convinced him the defender brings just as much inside the walls of the training ground.
“He's had a great impact as well in the changing room. He's integrated really well. He's a great guy and with this freshness that he has brought, apart from his football qualities, he's a very great addition to the club.”
Chelsea head to Craven Cottage with a new campaign in front of them and a defender shaped by Italian ideas at the heart of their plans. How quickly that education translates to Premier League nights will be one of the early storylines of their season.
