Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Potential Return Boosts Chicago Fire for Playoffs
Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s season, once written off, is suddenly back on the table.
Chicago Fire defender Mbokazi, who tore a thigh muscle in late July and was initially expected to miss the rest of the year, is now on course for a possible return in time for the MLS Cup Playoffs in late November.
Fire coach Gregg Berhalter has rowed back on his earlier, bleak prognosis.
“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter admitted after Chicago’s 1-1 draw away to the New York Red Bulls. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”
For Chicago, that hint of optimism is significant.
Before the injury, Mbokazi had been a rock in the back line, one of the Fire’s most consistent performers. His form earned him a place in the MLS All Star game and, earlier in the year, he had already announced himself on the global stage.
At the World Cup, the young defender was one of Bafana’s standout figures, anchoring a back line that helped the national team reach the knockout phase for the first time in their history. His performances there marked him as one of the tournament’s breakout stars.
Then came the tear in late July. Momentum gone. Season, it seemed, over.
Now the recovery has shifted the conversation. An earlier-than-expected return would be a major boost for Chicago as they look toward the playoffs, but it comes with a twist for his country.
Bafana face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15. Those fixtures fall just days before Mbokazi is likely to be ready to rejoin Chicago’s matchday squad.
If the revised timeline holds, the Fire may get their defensive pillar back when it matters most. Bafana, though, look set to fight through those qualifiers without one of their brightest young stars.
