IUP Women's Soccer Battles to 2-2 Draw Against Clarion
INDIANA, Pa. – IUP threw everything at Clarion. The scoreboard never quite tilted their way.
Kat Morgan struck twice, including a second-half equalizer, as IUP women’s soccer dominated territory but had to settle for a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at South Campus Field.
Morgan sets the tone, Clarion hits back
The Crimson Hawks came out on the front foot and never really stepped off it. They finished with a 14-3 advantage in shots, put nine on frame, and earned all six of the match’s corner kicks.
Their early pressure paid off quickly. In the ninth minute, Morgan broke the game open, tucking home after a sharp assist from Melody Leiva to hand IUP a 1-0 lead and set an attacking tone.
Clarion didn’t wilt. Just six minutes later, the Golden Eagles answered with ruthless efficiency. In the 15th minute, Leah Deal leveled the match, and suddenly IUP’s early control had been erased.
The visitors then landed another punch before halftime. In the 30th minute, Sofia Barba finished to give Clarion a 2-1 lead, sending IUP into the break behind despite having dictated most of the play.
One-way traffic after the break
If the first half was frustrating for IUP, the second was suffocating for Clarion.
The Crimson Hawks pinned the Golden Eagles deep and never let them breathe. Over the final 45 minutes, IUP outshot Clarion 8-0, turning the half into a near-constant defensive drill for the visitors.
The pressure finally told in the 74th minute. Morgan, who had been dangerous all afternoon, found the net again to tie the match at 2-2. She finished with two goals on four shots, every one of them on target.
Clarion’s survival owed plenty to goalkeeper Sage Sherk. Under steady fire, Sherk produced seven saves as IUP repeatedly carved out chances and forced the Golden Eagles’ back line to scramble.
Numbers tell a lopsided story
Leiva, influential throughout, registered three shots to go with her assist. Ayla Cook and Charlotte De Keukelaere each fired two shots, while Zoe Ans-Bitchoka and Avery Clanton also tested Sherk with efforts on goal.
At the other end, junior goalkeeper Sarah Gatz went the full 90 minutes for IUP. Clarion managed just two shots on goal all afternoon—and scored with both.
The draw nudges IUP to 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-2 in PSAC play, a record that hardly reflects the control they showed on Saturday. Clarion, clinical in front of goal, moves to 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference.
For the Crimson Hawks, the question now is simple: if they keep dictating games like this, when do the results finally start to match the performance?
