Ipswich Town’s Resilience Shines Despite Loss to Liverpool

Issa Diop insisted Ipswich Town’s dressing room did not fracture despite a brutal start to their 2-0 defeat by Liverpool at Portman Road.

Alexander Isak struck twice inside the opening 10 minutes to stun the hosts, but Diop said the response – if not the result – showed there is steel in this newly promoted side.

“It’s even harder when it’s again Liverpool and a top side like that,” the defender told BBC Radio Suffolk, reflecting on a night that could easily have unravelled. Instead of collapsing, Ipswich grew into the contest and carved out chances of their own as the game settled.

The early blows forced Ipswich to reset quickly. Diop felt they did.

“The good thing is the response after conceding the second goal was good,” he said. “We stuck together, we reacted well. We could have done better in different ways. You can always do better when you concede goals.”

That theme of collective resilience ran through his assessment. Ipswich, he stressed, will use the defeat as a reference point rather than a weight around their necks.

“This week we can work on it and we will be ready to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday,” Diop added, already looking ahead to a key test against a direct rival.

For all the frustration of another loss to elite opposition, the Frenchman was keen to underline the mood inside the club.

“We have a good group with good coaching staff,” he said. “So I’m very happy here.”

Liverpool have gone. Crystal Palace await. Ipswich now have to turn that togetherness into points.
