Simone Inzaghi's Selection Decisions for Al-Hilal vs Al-Ahli

Simone Inzaghi has made his first big selection call of the Saudi Roshn League season, cutting three players from Al-Hilal’s squad for today’s showdown with Al-Ahli at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.

The Italian coach has left out Turkey’s Yusuf Akcicek, France’s Simon Bouabre and midfielder Abdullah Al-Anazi, with each omission coming for a different reason.

  • Akcicek sits this one out after picking up a minor knee bruise, a knock Al-Hilal are unwilling to risk this early in the campaign.
  • Bouabre is also absent, still short of full match fitness and not yet ready for the intensity of a top-of-the-table clash.
  • Al-Anazi’s situation is more brutal. He has simply fallen out of the technical staff’s plans for this game, a clear signal of the standards and competition inside Inzaghi’s squad as the season begins to take shape.

One name does survive the cut. English striker Wally Watkins is included in the matchday group, though his actual involvement will be decided late. Inzaghi will make the final call during the technical meeting before the team departs for the stadium, leaving Watkins on standby for what could be a key role off the bench or from the start.

Al-Hilal arrive in the third round sitting second in the Roshn League table, perfect so far with 9 points from 3 matches. They trail leaders Al-Nassr by three points but hold a game in hand, a cushion that keeps early pressure at bay and turns tonight into an opportunity rather than a rescue mission.

Al-Ahli, seventh with 6 points from 3 games, see it differently. A positive result against Al-Hilal would not just tighten the standings; it would jolt them up the table and send a message in a league where momentum can flip in a single night under the Riyadh lights.
