Hugo Ekitike's Rehabilitation Journey at Clairefontaine

Hugo Ekitike has offered a fresh glimpse into his rehabilitation as Liverpool continue to wait on the return of their big-money striker.

The 24-year-old has been out since rupturing his Achilles tendon in April, an injury serious enough to wipe out the end of his impressive first season at Anfield and a large chunk of the new campaign. Liverpool always knew this would be a long road back. Ekitike is now showing he is deep into that journey.

Clairefontaine grind for £79m forward

Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt 12 months ago in a deal worth up to £79million, Ekitike hit 17 goals before his debut season was abruptly cut short. The momentum vanished in an instant. Surgery followed. Then the long, lonely work of recovery.

That work has now taken him to one of French football’s most iconic bases.

Centre Medical de Clairefontaine, the rehabilitation arm of the famed Clairefontaine complex used by France’s men’s and women’s national teams, posted a series of photos of Ekitike going through his paces as he continues his comeback. The striker reshared the post on his Instagram story and liked it, underlining where he is spending this phase of his rehab.

The centre’s caption read: "At Clairefontaine, there is the Chateau for national team call-ups... and the Medical Centre for their rehabilitation. Thank you to our Bleus* and Bleues for their trust."

For Liverpool, those images are a welcome sight: their France international back on the grass, moving, building strength, edging closer to the level required to lead the line again.

Iraola’s blunt timeline

Andoni Iraola has never sugar-coated the situation. During pre-season, the Liverpool boss set out the scale of the task facing Ekitike and his fellow long-term absentees.

"In terms of order, I think the closest one to returning is [Giovanni] Leoni. After will be Conor [Bradley] and Hugo [Ekitike], but especially the last two are still way off," he said in July. "We are talking about months and still a lot of time out."

The message was clear: progress, yes, but patience required.

Liverpool are juggling several major injuries. Leoni has been sidelined since tearing his ACL on his debut last September. Bradley has been out since suffering a knee injury in January. Ekitike’s Achilles problem only added to a list that has forced Iraola to think long term rather than week to week.

For now, the club’s record attacking investment continues his rebuild in the quiet of Clairefontaine’s medical wing. The next time he pulls on a red shirt, Liverpool will discover whether that 17-goal burst before disaster struck was only the beginning.
