Hartlepool United Face Double Injury Blow with Merrick and Kouogun
Hartlepool United have been dealt a brutal double injury setback, with goalkeeper Max Merrick ruled out for six weeks and defender Max Kouogun facing the prospect of ankle surgery.
Manager Darren Clark confirmed that Merrick, on loan from Chelsea, has suffered a thigh tear that forced him off just after the half-hour mark in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking. The young keeper has already returned to his parent club for treatment.
“Max obviously went straight back down to Chelsea with it being his parent club and the medical facilities they have there,” Clark told BBC Radio Tees. “He’s had a scan. We spoke with their medical team – not good news, but probably what we expected. He’s got a thigh tear, so he’ll be out for six weeks.”
Chelsea’s medical department will now oversee the bulk of Merrick’s rehab.
“You can imagine what a top elite European club has in terms of facilities and the attention that they can have in terms of the amount of medical staff that they have as well,” Clark said. “He’ll get the very best of attention there and then when he gets close to that return, he’ll come back up with us. We’re keeping in touch with him every day, making sure that everything’s okay.”
The timing could hardly be worse. Hartlepool had just ground out a clean sheet against Woking when Merrick broke down, prompting the introduction of summer signing Nathan Fisher. The 21-year-old is now in line to start under the lights at Kidderminster Harriers on Friday night (19:45 BST), a significant step up in responsibility.
That change would also see player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith move up to act as second-choice keeper.
If Merrick’s absence is damaging, Kouogun’s situation cuts even deeper. The defender has been sidelined since landing awkwardly in the defeat to Eastleigh in August, and scans have now revealed ankle ligament damage.
“Following on from that, we’ve had a scan on Max Kouogun with his ankle issue when he landed in the Eastleigh game, he’s got some kind of ligament damage, so Max will be out for a minimum of two months,” Clark explained.
The next step is crucial. Hartlepool are waiting on a specialist’s verdict that will determine just how long they will be without one of their key figures.
“We’re going to see a consultant to see whether it needs surgery, if that would be the case, that would take up to three months,” Clark added. “So that’s a big blow for us because Max is a big player for us in every sense of the word.”
Two senior players, two long layoffs, and a squad suddenly stretched. Clark now has to weigh up his options in the market. He is set for talks with Chris Maxwell, head of football operations at club advisors Bromby & Partners, to explore whether Hartlepool can bring in cover for Merrick while the Chelsea loanee recovers.
With Fisher stepping into the firing line and Kouogun facing a race against the calendar, Hartlepool’s early-season resilience is about to be tested.
