Haaland Cleared for Community Shield Against Arsenal
Erling Haaland has been cleared to play for Manchester City in the Community Shield against Arsenal, easing any late anxiety over the striker’s fitness.
The Norwegian sat out the final stages of Thursday’s open training session, sparking concern among supporters, but Enzo Maresca moved quickly to shut down any fears on Friday.
“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the City boss said in his pre-match press conference, confirming his main No 9 is available in Cardiff.
Haaland fit – but will he start?
Haaland punished Arsenal last season with two goals in three meetings and his presence alone changes the mood of any City lineup. The twist this time: he has not played a single minute in pre-season.
After driving Norway to the World Cup quarter-finals, the forward was handed an extended break and has been building up fitness away from the spotlight. Match sharpness is another matter.
That opens the door for Omar Marmoush. The Egyptian has impressed across the summer and underlined his form with a brace in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid. On rhythm alone, he has a strong case to lead the line from the start, with Haaland held back as a heavyweight option from the bench.
Midfield shake-up as Reijnders departs
Behind them, Maresca must rework his midfield. Tijjani Reijnders is on the brink of completing his move to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah and is not expected to be involved, leaving a vacancy alongside Mateo Kovacic.
Rico Lewis, trusted in that role during the win over K-League Allstars, offers continuity and tactical discipline. City’s £116million summer signing Elliot Anderson brings power and drive, and a debut here would be a statement, but the England international has only just returned to training, as have Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki.
With that in mind, Nico Gonzalez may be the safer, more prepared choice to slot in next to Kovacic as Maresca looks for balance in the middle of the pitch.
Rodri is back at the club after minor back surgery, yet remains in the rehabilitation phase. All signs point to this game arriving too early for him, stripping City of their usual metronome and adding another layer of intrigue to Maresca’s selection.
Defence takes shape
At the back, Rayan Ait-Nouri has used pre-season to make his case. Sharp, aggressive and confident on the ball, he has pushed hard for the left-back spot.
If he gets it, Josko Gvardiol is likely to move inside to partner Ruben Dias at centre-back, giving City a physically imposing and technically secure pairing in the heart of defence.
So Haaland is fit. Marmoush is flying. The midfield is in flux and the back line is evolving. For a curtain-raiser that is often treated as a gentle warm-up, this one carries the feel of an early test of Maresca’s new City – and of how quickly they can click without their usual anchors.
