Morgan Gibbs-White Set for England Recall After Cole Palmer Injury
Morgan Gibbs-White is in line for an England recall, with the Nottingham Forest playmaker expected to replace the injured Cole Palmer in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, according to reports.
Palmer is set to withdraw from the national team after picking up a minor injury, a setback that cuts across what had been a strong start to his club season. The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another outing in a campaign where he has been central to the Blues’ attacking plans.
After a summer spent on the outside looking in following his omission from England’s World Cup squad, Palmer had responded on the pitch. Six starts from seven league games, four goals, two assists. He had forced his way back into Tuchel’s thinking and back into the senior setup.
That is what makes this withdrawal sting. Tuchel had brought him back with a clear challenge. Before the injury, the England manager made no attempt to hide the stakes, insisting Palmer had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.”

Initially left out of Tuchel’s squad, the 26-year-old was, in the manager’s own words on Friday, extremely close to making the final list. Now he is set to step through the door that has opened.
Gibbs-White has begun the domestic campaign in sharp form for Forest, with one goal and two assists in five league matches. He last wore an England shirt in October 2025, starting in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales. That night felt like a glimpse of a possible future. This call-up could be the moment it starts to take shape.
