Germany's Defensive Woes Overshadow Sane's Bright Start in Group Stage Loss to Ecuador

Germany fell 2-1 to Ecuador in a World Cup group stage match that highlighted defensive weaknesses as the knockout rounds approach. Julian Nagelsmann's team started strong, scoring early through Leroy Sane, but conceded twice and failed to respond effectively. Despite finishing top of the group, Germany's mood was dampened heading into the next stage.

Early Lead Follows Lucky Break

The match began with intensity from Germany. A fortunate moment came when Alex Pavlovic won possession off a throw-in but accidentally hit Pedro Vite’s face with his foot. Florian Wirtz capitalized on the loose ball, setting up Sane, who scored. Though Ecuador protested, the goal stood.

“When you have such a good start and take the lead, you have to focus on the spaces. Today we lost control a bit after scoring,” said Nagelsmann.

Ecuador’s Resilience Shines Through

Ecuador responded well, leveling the score when Nilson Angulo struck from 20 yards for their first tournament goal. The remainder of the first half saw few clear chances, marked by intense pressure and tackles from both sides.

“It was tough adjusting to Ecuador’s pressing,” Nagelsmann remarked.

Second Half Slips Away

The second half sparked quickly, with Germany nearly winning a penalty for a foul on Kai Havertz. The referee ruled out the chance due to an earlier infringement. From there, Ecuador dominated, driven by necessity to win and buoyed by a largely pro-Ecuador crowd.

Their second goal emerged from a battle in the box: Kevin Rodriguez outjumped Jonathan Tah, and Gonzalo Plata stretched past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to score, igniting celebrations among Ecuador fans.

“Life is about learning to suffer with faith and calmness. We had a plan and belief,” Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece said after the game.

Germany tried to fight back, but with many starters rotated out, their bench lacked creativity. Nagelsmann’s choice to field a strong lineup despite having already secured group victory made the defeat more disappointing.

“Losing is never good, even when group top spot is assured. We’ll learn and move forward,” said Nagelsmann.
