FPL GW5: Wildcard vs Free Hit – Surya and Srini's Strategies

Gameweek 4 left chaos in its wake. Leeds were the only side to win at home, popular picks misfired, and penalties swung ranks all over the place. Out of that mess, the two founders of AllAboutFPL, Surya and Srini, have both reached for the nuclear buttons.

One has hit the Wildcard.
The other has smashed the Free Hit.

Here’s how they’re attacking FPL GW5 and beyond.

Surya: Wildcard Active, Structure Over Short-Term Panic

GW4: Free Hit, But No Big Hit

Surya’s Free Hit in GW4 returned 78 points. On paper, not a disaster. In reality, it stung.

He backed the Arsenal triple-up and got the call broadly right, but the details hurt. No David Raya. No Bukayo Saka. Both scored from the spot and swung the week away from him. Add in the Joao Pedro injury concern and a handful of fires across the squad, and the decision was made.

Wildcard. GW5. Done.

Why Pull the Wildcard Before a Three-Week Break?

Most managers fear the international break. Three weeks of training, travel, and potential injuries. Surya has gone the other way.

His view is simple: the squad is a mess now, and the fixtures ahead are too good to ignore. The Wildcard isn’t just a reset; it’s a structural rebuild.

The core template he wants:

• Erling Haaland
• Cole Palmer
• Bukayo Saka
• Morgan Gibbs-White
• Double Arsenal defence

Around that, he’s targeting value picks from teams with strong upcoming runs, building a squad that can sit for several weeks without constant surgery.

The current draft, rated 91% on Fantasy Football Hub’s free AI Team Rating Tool, is projected at 59 points for GW5. Numbers aside, it’s the shape he’s chasing.

Defence & Goalkeepers: Double Arsenal, DEFCON Reliability

Double Arsenal at the back is, in his words, a “no-brainer” on Wildcard. The fixtures and clean sheet potential are there, and the price points fit the structure.

• Konsa at 4.5m offers serious value and a nailed role.
• Muharemovic and Silva are the DEFCON darlings – steady four-pointers almost every week, regardless of opponent.
• Munoz is the upside punt, with Coventry, Crystal Palace and Ipswich in the next four. He’s there to chase attacking returns while the fixtures are soft.

This isn’t a rotation-heavy defence. It’s built for reliability with one or two ceiling plays.

Midfield: Premium Talismen and a DEFCON Gem

The midfield is where Surya leans heavily on talisman theory and underlying numbers.

• Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer are the premium anchors. Both are on penalties, both are central to everything their sides do in attack.
• The medium-term plan includes a possible switch in GW11 or GW12, with one of them making way for Bruno Fernandes when Manchester United’s fixtures turn kinder.

Then comes the data monster.

Morgan Gibbs-White:

• 1st among midfielders for Big Chances Created (4)
• 5th for xGI (2.57)

He has multiple routes to points – creativity, set pieces, bonus – and sits at the heart of Forest’s attack.

King is the budget midfield swing. He faces three promoted sides in a row from GW6 to GW8 and operates in an advanced No.10 role, consistently finding good scoring positions. Surya is backing him as a differential with genuine breakout potential.

Then there’s the bee in the middle of it all.

Vitaly Janelt rounds off the midfield as the eighth attacker and budget enabler:

• GW2: 10 DEFCON
• GW3: 12 DEFCON
• GW4: 20 DEFCON
• 13.75 DEFCON per 90

He offers set-piece involvement, defensive contributions, and the occasional attacking return. On a Wildcard, that kind of reliability at £5.0m is gold.

Forwards: Haaland, the Data Beast Barry, and Wissa

No drama with the first slot.

Erling Haaland is locked.

Next to him, Surya is going hard on fixtures and underlying numbers with Barry:

• Two promoted teams in the next two Gameweeks
• 90 minutes every match, no rotation risk
• Only behind Haaland among forwards for xG, xGI, shots, shots in the box and big chances

He’s been unlucky to score just once so far, but with those stats and those fixtures, Surya is betting that the dam is about to burst.

The final forward is Wissa, who has:

• HUL (H)
• COV (A)
• AVL (H)
• CRY (A)

Two promoted sides, two struggling outfits, and no European distraction for Newcastle’s attack around him. Wissa is a calculated punt with both fixture and form upside. Garcia is the other name under consideration for that slot, and Surya hasn’t fully closed that door yet.

Captaincy: No Gamble Against Haaland

Surya flirted briefly with the idea of captaining Gibbs-White at home to Coventry. Fantasy Football Hub projects him at 6.1 points, and the differential appeal is clear.

But Haaland is Haaland.

He tops AllAboutFPL’s GW5 captaincy metrics once again, and with the Wildcard already in play, Surya isn’t about to double down on risk by fading the most explosive asset in the game. Haaland wears the armband.

Srini: Free Hit Loaded, One-Week Assault on GW5

GW4: Missed Swings, Big Reset

For Srini, GW4 was defined by absence.

No Pascal Gross, no double-up in the Liverpool midfield. The Chelsea attacking triple-up returned, but that didn’t move the needle much because so many managers owned them. The real pain came from the same source that hurt Surya – no Saka, no Raya, and a huge swing in rank in the wrong direction.

So he’s taken a different route.

Where Surya has gone long-term with a Wildcard, Srini has chosen the sharp, one-week blade of the Free Hit in GW5.

Why Free Hit Now?

Srini’s strategy is clear: target home bankers against promoted or struggling sides and squeeze every drop of upside from one Gameweek.

The fixtures he’s circling:

• Everton vs IPS (H)
• Forest vs COV (H)
• Newcastle vs HUL (H)
• Leeds vs CRY (H)
• Man City vs SUN (H)

He wants to stack these spots aggressively without worrying about what the team looks like in GW6 and beyond.

The Joao Pedro Factor

The Joao Pedro situation has pushed him further towards the chip.

Xabi Alonso’s update was vague: no one ruled out, no specifics on Pedro’s injury, and the hint that he could play the next match but then miss Brazil duty. The most likely scenario, as Srini reads it, is that Pedro misses GW5, recovers during the international break, and returns around GW6.

That uncertainty, on top of his other issues, made the Free Hit more appealing. Only two or three players from his original squad are making it into the GW5 draft.

Around them, he’s playing with combinations for the remaining five spots.

He’s clear on a few structural points:

• There will be Manchester City defensive coverage.
• There will be a Leeds defender.
• There will be an Everton defender.

He likes three different draft options and is leaning towards the one currently shown in his bus team. The final tweaks will come closer to deadline, but the spine is set.

Captaincy: Rested Haaland, Prime Fixture

For Srini, the armband call is even more straightforward than for Surya.

Haaland has had his midweek rest. Sunderland at home is on deck. City have the highest goal-scoring odds of the Gameweek, and when City score, Haaland is almost always in the thick of it.

No overthinking here. Haaland is captain.
