FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle in 3-0 Victory
FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They brushed them aside. A sharp, confident 3-0 win at the Euroborg lifted Dick Lukkien’s team up to sixth, while Zwolle slid down to 16th and deeper into trouble.
Zwolle came north still stinging from that 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord, talking about a reaction, about pride. On the pitch, though, Groningen seized control almost immediately and never really let go.
The opening goal felt inevitable. After 20 minutes, Groningen sliced through. Marco Rente threaded a clever ball into Jorg Schreuders, who showed real composure in the box. Instead of snatching at the chance, he looked up and rolled it back perfectly for Thom van Bergen. One touch, calm finish, 1-0. Simple, ruthless football.
The pressure only grew. Zwolle, fragile after last week’s collapse, struggled to build any rhythm. Passes went astray, confidence drained. Groningen sensed it.
The second goal came from that hesitation. Ryan Thomas lost the ball in a dangerous area and Schreuders pounced. He stepped onto it, shifted his weight and, with what is supposed to be his weaker left foot, drilled a low strike from outside the box. 2-0, and the Euroborg roared. Groningen were cruising; Zwolle looked shell-shocked again.
Lukkien’s side managed the game smartly from there. They stayed aggressive without losing shape, forcing Zwolle to chase shadows for long spells. When the visitors finally carved out something, it came after the interval.
For the first time, Groningen were stretched. A low cross from the left skidded into the area and Gabriël Reiziger darted across the near post to meet it. He made contact, but not enough. The ball slid agonisingly wide, a half-chance that summed up Zwolle’s night: close, but never quite convincing.
That brief flicker of threat did not change the pattern. Groningen kept them at arm’s length, picking their moments to break. And when the third goal arrived, it did so in style.
On 68 minutes, the home side earned an indirect free-kick and unveiled a rehearsed routine. A short touch, a set body shape, and Tygo Land stepped up to detonate it. His strike flew into the top corner, a thumping finish that killed off any lingering doubt. 3-0, and fully deserved.
The confidence was flowing now. Van Bergen, already on the scoresheet, almost added another. A loose ball dropped kindly for him in the box, he swung his left foot at it, but this time the contact was scruffy and the chance went begging.
It did not matter. The damage was done long before the final whistle.
For Groningen, this was a statement of control and efficiency, a performance that backs up their climb into the top six. For PEC Zwolle, after 7-0 and now 3-0, the question is no longer about a response in words. It is about how quickly they can find one on the pitch before the table starts to harden around them.
