Predictions for Group Winners at the 2026 World Cup
Group A: Mexico
The host nation Mexico enjoys a home-field edge and was seeded in Pot 1. Despite sitting 15th in FIFA rankings, its group opponents—South Korea, South Africa, and Czechia—are less daunting than some others. South Korea and Czechia will test Mexico, and South Africa could spring surprises, yet Mexico remains the likely group leader.
Group B: Switzerland
Switzerland appears strongest in what is considered the tournament's weakest group. Canada, also a host and placed in Pot 1, might find topping this group challenging despite favorable conditions. Qatar and Bosnia & Herzegovina lack the depth and experience that Switzerland brings to the field.
Group C: Brazil
It's expected that Brazil will lead Group C, though Morocco, who reached the semifinals in 2022 and now ranks eighth globally, could challenge them. Scotland and Haiti are unlikely to stand in Brazil or Morocco's way.
Group D: United States
With Mauricio Pochettino coaching and the advantage of hosting, the United States should perform well. Their main rival for first place will be UEFA playoff winner Türkiye, whose young, talented squad promises tough competition. Australia and Paraguay also shouldn’t be underestimated.
Group E: Germany
Germany has struggled to replicate past glories but should still top this group. Ecuador impressed during qualifiers and might cause an upset, while Côte d'Ivoire no longer possesses the power it had in previous decades. Debutants Curaçao are unlikely to impact the standings.
Group F: Netherlands
The Netherlands is favored to finish first, relying on strong squad depth and individual talent. Japan, fresh from defeating England recently, hopes to repeat their 2022 upsets against top teams. Sweden’s attack and Tunisia’s potential shock could make this group very competitive.
Group G: Belgium
Belgium is no longer the powerhouse it once was, with key players like Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois still present but defensive weaknesses apparent. Egypt looks like their closest competitor, while Iran’s participation is uncertain. New Zealand is expected to struggle against these teams.
Group H: Spain
Spain faces one real challenger in former champions Uruguay, coached by Marcelo Bielsa. Saudi Arabia and debutant Cape Verde—who surprisingly defeated Argentina in 2022—are also in this group. The outcome between Spain and Uruguay will probably decide the group leader.
Group I: France
Known as the 'Group of Death,' France stands out but faces strong challenges from Senegal and Norway. Iraq is likely to endure heavy defeats. Matches among France, Senegal, and Norway promise intense competition, with France expected to come out on top despite the tough draw.
Group J: Argentina
Defending champions Argentina seem set to cruise to first place. Austria and Algeria will battle for second, and Jordan’s World Cup debut may prove difficult against stronger teams.
Group K: Portugal
Portugal and Colombia both look capable of winning the group. Their matchup will be key. Uzbekistan and DR Congo might offer more resistance than expected but are less likely to affect the final standings significantly.
Group L: England
England and Croatia, close in FIFA rankings and 2018 semifinal foes, will compete fiercely for the top spot. England, coached by Thomas Tuchel, is favored to prevail but must also navigate challenges from Panama and unpredictable Ghana.
