Estevao Returns to Brazil Squad: A Story of Resilience

The Chelsea forward, just 19, is back in the Brazil squad. Back with Carlo Ancelotti. Back where he always believed he belonged.

This call-up, announced for the upcoming FIFA Super Date tour in Australia and India, is more than a line on a team sheet. It is his first international summons since a brutal right hamstring tear with Chelsea in April 2026 ripped him out of one of football’s biggest stages.

Estevao spoke openly in Brisbane about the weight of that experience. Conservative treatment at former club Palmeiras kept him off the operating table, but it also kept him away from the tournament he had dreamt of since childhood.

The winger, once a standout in the Cruzeiro academy, didn’t hide the emotional cost.

“My family was fundamental to me during this injury period, which isn't very easy for an athlete,” he said. “We missed a very special moment, but they were always by my side. I also used a lot of the word resilience, facing each day, forgetting what happened and focusing on the future.”

That became his routine: one day at a time, one small gain at a time. No stadium noise. No national anthem. Just rehab, repetition and the quiet fight to stay mentally intact while Brazil played on without him.

Ancelotti, privilege and a new battle for a starting spot

Before the injury, Estevao had exploded onto the international scene under Ancelotti. Goals against Chile, South Korea, Senegal and Tunisia had marked him out as one of the faces of Brazil’s new generation, a fearless wide player thriving alongside Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior.

Now he wants that spot back.

The competition is fierce, but he brushed aside any suggestion that the pressure might be getting to him.

“I don’t think it’s anxiety, I think it’s a privilege,” he said. “Every player who is chosen here is privileged. Being chosen by Ancelotti is a privilege for me. I see this as motivation to give my best every day in training and in games.”

No hint of nerves, just a clear message: he intends to turn this recall into something permanent.

Australia, India and a new cycle for the Selecao

Brazil’s tour begins on Friday against Australia at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville, the first of two meetings with the Socceroos. The sides clash again on September 29 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, before Ancelotti’s team head to Kolkata to face India on October 3 at Salt Lake Stadium.

For Estevao, every minute on this tour matters. Every sprint, every duel, every touch is part of a bigger mission: to lock himself in as a central figure in Brazil’s new cycle.

The injury cost him a World Cup. This window offers something different — the chance to prove that missing that tournament was a detour, not a defining chapter.
