Enzo Fernández's Uncertain Future at Chelsea Amid Manchester City Interest
Xabi Alonso has refused to promise that Chelsea will stand firm if Manchester City come hard for Enzo Fernández – and the uncertainty around the midfielder is starting to define their window.
No guarantees on Enzo
Fernández’s future remains wide open. Chelsea’s informal cut-off for written bids of £120m for the Argentina international has come and gone, but the threat of a late move has not. City, reshaping their midfield after Rodri’s move to Barcelona, have placed Fernández high on their list while also monitoring Roma’s Manu Koné.
They are weighing up whether to act before the deadline. Chelsea know it could get messy.
Inside Stamford Bridge, there is no illusion that this is a closed case. Fernández has made clear he wants out, and Alonso was deliberately evasive when asked if the 25-year-old will still be his player when the window shuts.
“Enzo is a Chelsea player,” the former Real Madrid manager said. “He’s a top player. He’s training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team. Very integrated, and we are happy with him. He’s getting ready for Monday.”
That was as far as he would go. No pledge. No line in the sand.
Preparing for Fulham with one eye on City
Chelsea start their Premier League campaign away at Fulham on Monday night. Fernández is expected to be in the squad, but even on the eve of the season, Alonso sidestepped another attempt to pin him down on the player’s intentions, this time over whether the £106.7m signing has told him he wants to stay.
“He’s training really well. I see him with a good attitude. That’s what we want. Everyone is trying their best to prepare for the kick off of the Premier League.”
For now, Chelsea lean on attitude and application. The rest sits in the hands of the market.
Replacements lined up – but not easily available
If Fernández goes, Chelsea will move. They have already lined up potential replacements, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton high on their list.
Scott is admired, heavily. Chelsea have already seen one offer for the 22-year-old knocked back and have been told Bournemouth intend to resist any sale this summer. Wharton is another serious option, yet that chase is complicated as well: City have already had a bid for the England midfielder rejected by Palace.
The picture is clear enough. Chelsea may have money to spend if Fernández leaves, but prising away their preferred targets will be anything but straightforward.
Trimming the squad, reshaping the attack
While the Enzo saga rumbles on, Alonso is also working on the other side of the squad – cutting numbers and clearing space.
Up front, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu have slipped down the pecking order and are expected to move on. Delap has no shortage of admirers, with Everton, Leeds, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest all tracking the forward.
There is movement around the edges of the squad too. Chelsea retain interest in Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto as they look at options in wide and defensive areas, while Palace are pushing to strengthen their own back line with a loan move for Axel Disasi.
Chelsea head to Craven Cottage with Enzo Fernández still in blue, City still circling and the window still open. How long can that combination hold?
