Newcastle United Targets Wilfried Singo for Defensive Reinforcement

Newcastle United’s summer rebuild has been driven by youth and upside, but the work is far from finished with the window running until Sept. 1. The next big call may come at the heart of Matthias Jaissle’s defense.

Amar Dedic is already through the door to reinforce the right flank, a signing that fits the club’s long-term, high-energy blueprint. Yet Newcastle continue to circle around centre-backs, aware that an aging back line needs more than one fresh face.

Now a new name has surged to the front of the rumour mill: Wilfried Singo.

Newcastle test Galatasaray’s resolve

Turkish outlet Fanatik reported on Tuesday that Newcastle have lodged a €40 million (£34.5 million) bid with Galatasaray for the Ivory Coast international. The 25-year-old is described as a “versatile” defender, and Fanatik say the Premier League club have “officially entered the race” for his signature.

The fee is no small opening gambit. Singo only arrived in Istanbul from Monaco last summer for around €30 million (£25.9 million). One season on, a €40m offer would already hand the Turkish champions a sizeable profit and underline Newcastle’s intent to accelerate their defensive refresh.

Galatasaray, though, are in no mood to sell on the cheap. Reports in Turkey suggest the club are holding out for something closer to €60 million (£51.3 million), a figure that would turn Singo into a record departure and test just how badly Newcastle want him.

Fanatik add that the Galatasaray hierarchy are “not rushing into a decision” on a player tied down on a long-term deal through to 2030. With that contract security, the Turkish side can afford to play hardball.

A long-standing target, a new dilemma

Newcastle’s interest is not a bolt from the blue. The Magpies were linked with Singo more than a year ago while he was still at Monaco, when his market valuation hovered around €25 million — slightly above the current estimate of €23 million.

His appeal is obvious. Singo can operate as a central defender and at right-back, a blend that would hand Jaissle valuable tactical flexibility as he reshapes a back line that has carried heavy minutes over several seasons. He fits the profile: athletic, adaptable, in his mid-20s.

But this is where the debate sharpens. Newcastle have already moved to strengthen the right side with Dedic, and they are not short of options in both positions Singo can occupy. Spending €40 million on a player who might initially arrive as cover rather than a guaranteed starter raises a clear question about value.

Push towards Galatasaray’s €60m stance, stick at the reported €40m, or walk away and redirect funds to another defensive target?

That is the calculation facing Newcastle’s recruitment team as the clock ticks towards Sept. 1 and the market tightens around every top-level centre-back.
