Edmond Tapsoba: Premier League's Top Transfer Target

Edmond Tapsoba has moved to the top of Premier League shopping lists this summer, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle all circling the Bayer Leverkusen defender.

The 27-year-old Burkina Faso international has drawn sustained interest from England in recent weeks, and the battle for his signature is beginning to take shape.

United make the first move

Manchester United have already opened talks with Tapsoba’s camp, sounding out the conditions of a potential deal as they look to reinforce the heart of their defence. Their interest is described as the most advanced at this stage, with concrete contact made with the player’s representatives.

Tottenham and Newcastle are not standing still. Both clubs are keeping close lines of communication as they weigh up whether to push harder for a player viewed as an immediate upgrade to their defensive options.

Leverkusen’s stance: big fee or nothing

Leverkusen have been clear. Tapsoba will not leave cheaply.

The German champions value him at €50million (£42.8m / £58.4m), a figure that reflects both his importance to Xabi Alonso’s side and the security of his situation. Earlier this year, Tapsoba signed a contract extension running all the way to 2031, giving Leverkusen significant leverage at the negotiating table.

They would prefer to keep him. He is a cornerstone of their back line. But a suitably strong financial offer would at least be entertained.

A complete modern centre-back

Tapsoba’s appeal is obvious. He is widely viewed as one of the most complete centre-backs in the Bundesliga: powerful in duels, quick across the ground, and comfortable stepping out with the ball to start attacks.

Since arriving from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2020, he has become a fixture at the heart of Leverkusen’s defence, racking up 270 appearances in all competitions and contributing 13 goals. That blend of reliability and technical quality has convinced Premier League scouts that his profile fits the pace and intensity of English football.

A transfer race with complications

The window is still open and the story has room to run. United’s early move gives them a foothold, but Tottenham and Newcastle’s continued interest ensures no side can feel secure.

Leverkusen’s firm price tag and Tapsoba’s long-term deal put the German club in a commanding negotiating position, and any agreement will be complex rather than routine.

One thing is clear: as the market for elite centre-backs tightens, Edmond Tapsoba has become one of the most coveted defensive options available. The only question now is which Premier League club is willing to pay the price to prise him out of Leverkusen.
