England’s Thrilling World Cup Win Draws Record BBC Audience

The BBC attracted its largest live audience of 2026 when millions tuned in to watch England’s intense World Cup round of 32 match against DR Congo. The thrilling encounter pulled in 16.3 million viewers across the UK.

The match was far from straightforward for England fans. DR Congo scored early and held off Thomas Tuchel’s team for over an hour. Yet, captain Harry Kane came through with two late goals, securing England’s place in the last 16.

On average, 14 million people watched the game, marking it as the most viewed moment on the BBC this year. Digital platforms also saw a surge: BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and the BBC Sport app recorded 10.4 million streams combined. The live coverage page alone gathered more than 20 million global views, 14 million originating from the UK.

Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC Director of Sport, said: "These numbers show the BBC remains the destination where the nation unites for major sporting events. England’s dramatic win captivated millions across TV, digital channels, and social media. We are proud to offer premium UHD broadcasts, immersive experiences, and expert analysis, delivering key moments to fans however they choose to watch."

Looking Ahead: England Faces Mexico in Round of 16

With this win, England moves forward to face Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The match will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 1am on Monday, July 6. Mexico, co-hosts of the tournament, have won all four games so far and boast a strong home record, having lost just twice in 89 matches at the altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level.

Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that the high altitude poses a challenge for England, but with Kane leading the attack, the team remains confident. The World Cup continues with live games on BBC and ITV until the final on Sunday, July 19.
