England's Major Reshuffle for Nations League: Tuchel Calls Up Garner and Gibbs-White

England have been forced into a major reshuffle ahead of their Nations League fixtures, with five players withdrawing and two late call-ups drafted in by Thomas Tuchel.

Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of the squad, stripping Tuchel of key options across the pitch just days before the team meet up.

In their place come Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White, both summoned on Monday and due to link up with the group on Tuesday.

Tuchel turns to Garner and Gibbs-White

Tuchel had already hinted this might happen. On Friday he admitted Gibbs-White, 26, was “close” to making the original list. The Forest playmaker, who has six caps, now gets his chance after injuries opened the door.

Garner’s return is another twist. The Everton midfielder, who won both of his senior England caps in March, had been left out of the 2026 World Cup squad. Now he steps back into the fold as Tuchel shuffles his midfield options.

Palmer setback after recall

Palmer’s withdrawal will sting. Recalled after the controversy of his World Cup omission, the Chelsea forward looked set to be a central figure in Tuchel’s attacking plans. Instead, a minor injury has ruled him out before a ball is kicked in camp.

Mainoo and Rashford add to the headache. Both were taken off late in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday and assessed by club staff before being ruled out of international duty.

Rice, ever-present for Arsenal in their 3-0 defeat by Brighton, will not report either, depriving England of their midfield anchor. At the back, Livramento is also unavailable, the Newcastle defender having been restricted to just three substitute appearances this season.

What began as a statement squad from Tuchel has quickly turned into a test of depth. Now it is over to Garner and Gibbs-White to prove this reshaped England can still carry the manager’s imprint into the Nations League.
