Eli Junior Kroupi Receives Recognition for Ballon d'Or Young Talent Award
Joe Partington says Eli Junior Kroupi has finally been given the “rightful recognition” his talent deserves after the Bournemouth forward was shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d'Or Men's Young Talent of the Year award.
Kroupi, just 20 and currently sidelined with a broken foot, struck 13 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions last season, a breakout campaign that has now pushed him into elite company among the game’s brightest prospects.
Speaking on BBC Radio Solent's Cherries Unpicked podcast, former Bournemouth defender Partington could barely hide his amazement.
“It is just mad, isn't it?” he said. “We've had some exceptionally talented young players at this football club, but never one who has been involved in the Golden Boy award at the Ballon d'Or.”
For Bournemouth, the nomination is both a badge of honour and a sharp reminder of what they are missing.
Kroupi’s absence has left a clear void. “A big hole in the team,” as Partington put it.
“Eli Junior Kroupi did perform exceptionally well last season. Bournemouth really are missing him at the moment, there is a big hole in the team. They are missing him being a slight maverick, being a bit more creative and being able to take risks.”
Right now, Bournemouth’s play feels too controlled, too safe for Partington’s liking.
“Bournemouth feel a bit safe in their playing style at the moment, and he is a bums-off-seats kind of player. When he gets the ball in and around the box, people expect him to beat the goalkeeper or hit the target.”
That sense of anticipation has carried beyond the Vitality Stadium and into the global conversation. Being named among the top 10 young players in the world is, in Partington’s eyes, no fluke.
“It is rightful recognition for him to be included in those top 10 best young players in the word,” he said. “Will he win the award? I would say the likelihood is probably not, but it is great confirmation Bournemouth's recruitment team continue to hit the mark.”
The award may or may not follow. The spotlight already has.
For Bournemouth, the bigger concern is getting their young star back on the pitch and back to the level that put him on this list in the first place.
“Hopefully he is able to overcome this foot injury now and recapture the form that put him in this position in the first place,” Partington said.
If he does, the club that once simply hoped he might make the grade will be dealing with a very different question: how far can Eli Junior Kroupi actually go?
