Eintracht Frankfurt's Goalkeeping Dilemma: Hütter Stands by Santos
Adi Hütter is standing by his goalkeeper – at least for now.
The returning Eintracht Frankfurt coach confirmed that Brazilian keeper Santos will start the upcoming cup tie, even after the 0-7 humiliation at Brentford FC that has thrown the club’s goalkeeping situation back into the spotlight.
“He will play,” Hütter said on Wednesday, before quickly widening the lens to the bigger issue. The question of a new No. 1 remains open. “Then we will see what else happens in future,” added the Austrian, leaving the door unmistakably ajar.
That defeat in London did more than bruise egos. It reignited a debate that has been simmering around Santos for months. At 23, he was supposed to grow into the role. Instead, media reports now claim Hütter has lost faith in him, and the list of potential replacements is already circulating.
Potential Replacements
- Noah Atubolu of SC Freiburg
- Lukas Hradecky, currently at AS Monaco
Hütter, though, refused to be drawn into transfer talk – not about goalkeepers, not about any other position. For now, everything around the squad is being framed as internal business.
What he did address, in detail, was the Brentford collapse. The coach revealed he had sat down with his players to dissect the 7-0 defeat, and his verdict was blunt.
“Something like that is absolutely not on in that form,” he said. The review was “a clear analysis,” and Hütter called the thrashing “a warning shot.”
If the goalkeeping situation remains clouded, at least one key position looks more secure. In the cup, Hütter expects to have Robin Koch available. The captain and defensive organiser suffered a slight concussion in the Brentford match, but the coach sounded optimistic.
“I assume he will play,” Hütter stated.
So Santos keeps the gloves. Koch should marshal the back line. The humiliation at Brentford has been filed, dissected, and labelled a warning. Now comes the real test: does this squad respond, or does that 0-7 turn into the defining omen of Frankfurt’s season?
