Crystal Palace's Historic UEFA Europa League Debut: Key Forwards Returning

Crystal Palace are set for a European night they’ve waited their entire history to experience – and Pierre Sage might just have two key forwards back in time for it.

The Eagles welcome Polish champions Lech Poznan to Selhurst Park on Thursday in their first-ever UEFA Europa League fixture, a landmark occasion that arrives with a timely injection of good news. Ismaila Sarr, last season’s top scorer, and Eddie Nketiah are both in contention to return to the matchday squad.

Sarr has not kicked a competitive ball this season, his campaign stalled before it began by injury. Nketiah, by contrast, opened the season as a starter in Palace’s first three games, only to miss last week’s home fixtures. Their absence stripped Sage of two of his primary attacking weapons just as the schedule began to tighten.

Now, on the eve of Palace’s European debut, the picture looks brighter.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Lech Poznan, Sage confirmed that both forwards have rejoined full training and impressed the staff with their condition.

“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said of Sarr, underlining how hard the pair have pushed to get back.

The attacking boost is tempered by continued problems elsewhere. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta remain out, with Sage targeting a return for both after the upcoming international break. Henderson’s absence is significant on the pitch, but off it Palace have moved decisively to secure their captain’s future.

Just before Sage faced the media, the club announced that Henderson has signed a new long-term contract, tying him to Selhurst Park until 2030. For a side stepping into Europe for the first time, that kind of stability around a key figure feels crucial.

“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, hailing Henderson’s influence not only between the posts but inside the dressing room.

So Palace head into Thursday night with their captain committed, their main goalkeeper still recovering, and two forwards edging back towards the spotlight. The stage is set, the club’s European story about to begin. Now it’s over to Sarr, Nketiah and the rest to decide how that first chapter reads.
