Crystal Palace Prepare for Historic UEFA Europa League Debut
Crystal Palace are set for a European night they have never known before, and Pierre Sage might just have two of his main weapons back in time for it.
The club’s first-ever UEFA Europa League match arrives on Thursday under the lights at Selhurst Park, with Polish champions Lech Poznan the visitors. It is a landmark occasion, a night supporters have waited generations to see, and Sage heads into it with a timely boost in attack.
Sarr and Nketiah back in the frame
Ismaila Sarr, last season’s top scorer, has not kicked a competitive ball this campaign. Injury halted him before he could build on that breakout year, leaving Palace short of their most direct and dangerous runner in behind.
That wait may now be over.
“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said, sounding as upbeat as the club’s supporters will feel reading those words.
Nketiah opened the season in the side, starting the first three fixtures, then disappeared from the teamsheet for last week’s home games. His absence only underlined his importance. Palace lacked a focal point, a finisher. Now both he and Sarr have trained fully and, according to their manager, looked sharp doing it.
For a squad stepping into Europe for the first time, that is no small lift.
Henderson out, but commits his future
Not all the medical news is positive. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson remains out, as does forward Jean-Philippe Mateta. Sage is targeting their return after the upcoming international break, a more medium-term fix than he would like.
Yet just as the injury update seemed to darken, Palace delivered a jolt of good news off the pitch. Moments before Sage faced the media, the club announced that Henderson had signed a new long-term deal, tying the captain to Selhurst Park until 2030.
“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, underlining how central Henderson has become to the dressing room and to the club’s plans.
The goalkeeper will not be there to marshal his back line on Thursday, but his commitment sends a clear message: Palace are not treating this European campaign as a one-off adventure.

So it comes to this: a first step into the Europa League, a first test against continental champions, and a squad that suddenly feels stronger than it did a week ago.
With Sarr’s pace and Nketiah’s movement potentially restored to the matchday group, Sage has options again. He has the chance to set an aggressive tone for Palace’s European story rather than simply survive the occasion.
Lech Poznan arrive as seasoned campaigners on this stage. Palace arrive as newcomers. Only one of them gets to write the first chapter of a new era on Thursday night.
